« on: May 19, 2011, 08:54:35 AM »
Hi all am new here, having just got back into fishing after a break of 20 years. Have got a 14ft Savage Ranger, and was wondering if anyone here knows Toonumbar Dam near Kyogle,    ie accomodation, what's the fishing like, is it lures or bait??  As you can see am also completely new to freshwater fishing , so any comments/tips would help. thanks in advance

G'day Woody,
Toonumbah is OK for your boat but it's an 8knot speed limit. The launching ramp at bells bay near the camping area is OK but has a bit of aa drop off at the end of it. Most people use lures there and most types work on the day. We've had success with small chubby style lures cast up close to the water lillies but Softies with Bettle spins also work well, it just depends where the fish are holding. You could also try blades, but for some reason Spinner baits don't seem to be too popular there. The dam is stocked by the Kyogle fish stocking group and there an honesty system for donations. Bells bay has no facilities for camping other that long drop dunnies.
Cheers mate and welcome to the site,
JD

Impoundment bass yes but they will be very fussy with location time and lure/bait you present . definatly not impossible by any means tho.

The Bass will be there but they tend to go a bit deep at this time of the year. The previous gear I mentioned works mainly in the shallower margins of Toonumbah but if you are not doing any good you may have to switch on the sounder and see if they are schooling up in deeper water. Thats where the blades will come in handy, or even smaller spinnerbaits.
Cheers mate,
John
