MANGROVE JACK
« on: March 16, 2011, 07:33:40 PM »
Any one got any info on the above fish going into Awoonga ?

Talking to a fisherman today and he said it is happening.

I think I read someone saying once that you would have more chance of winning the lotto than catching a Jack in Awoonga.

They might have a good chance to grow up now if there has been a reduction in the Barra numbers and it would make an even greater destination with a second species to chase.

There in there.
Got a mate who got  a few a couple of  years back (2008 from memory). Biggest I saw a photo of from him was 14kilos and 90cm.

He worked out the pattern and got something like a dozen over 3 or 4 trips that summer.

He reckons they go like freight trains at that size.

Kurt Hutchby, manager of GAWB Hatchery will have the exact number that have gone in in past years. I'm sure he'll read this thread and inform you about the Mangrove Jacks that have been released into Awoonga.

In the mean time you may want to read an article on Johnny Mitchells website on the Reds in Awoonga. :youbeauty

Cheers Dave

PS Thanks Pilly I was trying to find JM's article to post while you posted up your reply with the amount of MJ's that have been stocked, an impressive amount hey.

A good read, thanks for that.  I thought the report may have been something recent.

If it was you guys would have heard of it I am sure.

I'm not convinced with this bit.  :-\
Call me sceptical, but I'll happily eat my words if that photo ( from Awoonga) can be brought to life!

exact numbers stocked are 70,500 mangrove jack to date.  the gawb website has been a little outdated for a while now.

dont get too excited about the number of barra been reduced in awoonga though.  johnny will fill you in with his thoughts, but from the time i have spent out there in the past 4 weeks, there are oodles of barra scattered throughout the dam (sounder work).  i will be trying to get some more in there in the next couple of months.

cheers

I'd like to see that one too.  A 90cm Jack, at 14kg would be almost uncatchable.  I got an 11lb Jack in PNG last year, and got a 12lb Black Bass shortly afterwards.  For length of fight the Jack won hands down, for initial hit the Black wins.  A 30lb Jack on impoundment gear, wow!
