All SE Qld lakes closed to on-water recreation until futher notice

Date: 20/02/2015

All Seqwater lakes will be temporarily closed to on-water recreation until further notice as a result of the severe weather event and significant rainfall forecast over the next 24 to 48 hours.

While some of our parks may remain open to the public during this event, it will also be necessary to close some of the recreation and park areas.

Our staff will monitor all sites and will place appropriate signage relating to closures.

If you become aware of a potentially dangerous situation at an Seqwater site, please call 000 (or 112) immediately, and then report it to Seqwater (telephone 1800 737 928 – 24 hours, 7 days a week) as soon as possible.

We urge you to take precautionary measures in relation to both rainfall and potentially rising flood waters in your area, and avoid travelling unless necessary.

Weather warnings and updates will be available on the Bureau of Meteorology website or via local radio stations.

For more information on lake closures, please visit the Seqwater website.

Title: Seqwater continues to monitor dam levels
Post by: Sweetwater on February 20, 2015, 06:27:41 PM
Afternoon Update - Seqwater continues to monitor dam levels
Posted 20 February 2015

Twelve Seqwater dams are currently spilling and operational releases are being made from Somerset Dam into Wivenhoe Dam to manage inflows.

Based on current forecasts Seqwater does not expect to have to make gate releases from Wivenhoe Dam as a result of this event but will continue to closely monitor all dam levels, rainfall and potential consequences of inflows into the dams across the region.

Seqwater Chief Executive Officer Peter Dennis said un-gated dams were designed to spill during periods of heavy rain to ensure the protection and safety of the dam.

“We do advise that people take care downstream of spilling dams and exercise caution near waterways and floodplains,” Mr Dennis said.

“Last night we mobilised our Flood Operations Centre as a precaution of the extreme weather event forecast for South East Queensland.”

Mr Dennis said mobilisation of the Centre had occurred to allow continuous monitoring of the dams owned by Seqwater across South East Queensland.

“Based on the ‘average estimate’ forecast from the Bureau of Meteorology, gate operations at Wivenhoe Dam or North Pine Dam are not currently planned.

“Seqwater is releasing water from Somerset Dam into Wivenhoe Dam to manage inflows and balance the water storage levels across both dams. This is a normal operational occurrence.

“Both Wivenhoe and Somerset dams still have their flood storage compartments fully available.”

Due to rainfall in the catchments, the following un-gated dams are currently spilling:
•Borumba Dam
•Enoggera Dam
•Ewen Maddock Dam
•Gold Creek Dam
•Little Nerang Dam
•Leslie Harrison Dam
•Wappa Dam
•Six Mile Creek Dam (Lake Macdonald)
•Cedar Pocket Dam
•Wyaralong Dam
•Poona Dam
•Sideling Creek Dam (Lake Kurwongbah).

South East Queensland residents can be alerted of gated releases or dams which are spilling through our free dam release notification service.
