North Pine Dam Optimisation Study
DEWS
The North Pine Dam Optimisation Study (NPDOS) will consider options for balancing the competing objectives of dam operations, flood mitigation and water supply security for South East Queensland.
The study is in response to Recommendations 17.3 and 17.9 of the Queensland Flood Commission of Inquiry's final report. The findings of the study will be presented to government in early 2014.
Scope
The study will investigate alternative strategies for the operation of North Pine Dam. This includes temporary, permanent or seasonal alterations to the full supply level, dam gate operating procedures and the duration of water releases.
The study will consider the impact of the dam's operations on the closure of downstream crossings and bridges.
The study will generally not be considering new infrastructure or expansion of existing dam infrastructure. However, the results of this study may lead to further investigations of other flood mitigation options (including infrastructure).
Consultation
This study is being led by the Department of Energy and Water Supply (DEWS) in partnership with other Queensland Government departments, Seqwater, and Brisbane City and Moreton Bay Regional councils.
North Pine Dam Optimisation Study meeting
On Thursday 17 October we will be holding an information session to discuss work being undertaken on North Pine Dam Optimisation Study.
The session will comprise a presentation on progress to date, and the process including public consultation that will take place to complete the studies.
Interested community groups, stakeholders and residents are invited to attend the meeting from 6:30–8:30 pm on Thursday 17 October 2013 at the Boardroom, North Pine Treatment Plant, Joyner.

DEWS is also leading an optimisation study of the Wivenhoe and Somerset dams.
The results of NPDOS, and the Wivenhoe and Somerset Dams Optimisation Study (WSDOS) will feed into the broader Brisbane River catchment flood study (led by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines) and the development of a Brisbane River catchment floodplain risk management plan (led by the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning).
The findings of this study will be reviewed again when the Brisbane River catchment studies are completed.
About the North Pine Dam
North Pine Dam (Lake Samsonvale) is located on the North Pine River, north-west of Brisbane. The dam has a full supply capacity of approximately 214,302 megalitres, supplying urban water (including drinking water) to the Moreton Bay region and Brisbane’s northern suburbs.
The dam has a catchment area of approximately 345 km2, receiving approximately 1,200 mm of rainfall annually, mostly occurring in summer.
While North Pine Dam does mitigate floods to a limited extent, it currently has no planned flood mitigation function. Significant inflows may occur into the dam approximately two to four hours after the commencement of heavy rain.

It has more to do with the management of water flow in and out of Wivenhoe and Somerset and the effects it will have on people and infrastructure upstream and downstream of the Dam walls. I don't know what input a volunteer fish stocking group will have into these decisions. As a local resident, I may attend the meeting next week. I'm sure SWFSA will discuss it at the meeting tonight and make a decision on what, if any, concerns there are. When they're studying the results of the floods over the last few years I would think fish stocking would be one of the last things they'll be concerned about. There is no real fiscal effect from the release of a few fish into the river when you compare it to the devastation at College's Crossing and Savage's Crossing.

Dale apparently you have better chains of communication in your area there has been no communication from DEW,Council or SEQ water to any organization that utilize NPD. Also nothing in local community papers.
Any changes to the FSL level of the dam can impact on the operation of the PRFMA,s boating access scheme and the operation of the Lake Sampsonvale Water Sports association. Releases also impact on the pony club that is situated below the dam wall.

You got the same notifications we did Ray. What I'm trying to say is that our groups don't matter in the overall scheme of running the lakes. They are for water supply and flood mitigation, we are fortunate enough to be able to have a recreational activity on them.
