Title: Dumaresq / Mole River 28 Jan
Post by: Sweetwater on January 28, 2012, 11:02:33 PM
Via mobile phone

Four of us paddled / fished from Mingoola Bridge to Riverton Bridge on the Dumaresq River today.

Distance is approx 11km by water. The Dumaresq  around Mingoola had very little flow until you get the the junction with the Mole River, which is flowing strongly after some good rain upstream.

The rain affecting se Qld has moved down and it started raining about mid morning, by lunchtime it was raining solidly and we weren't half way yet....

There's a few optional portages and a couple of critical ones that will see you hung up in trees or worse if you choose to test them out.

It wasn't the most successful trip down this river, in fact only one fish was boated on a wet and cold day; a 62cm cod caught by Dale with a few other hits and follows to keep things interesting.

I'd never done a bridge to bridge on this section of river before and am glad we did; getting to see sections of water we otherwise would never get to.

A big thanks to Brian and Debbie Dare from Glenlyon Dam Tourist Park for their hospitality. Brian just happened to be driving past Mingoola when we were taking one car to the extraction point, he offered to follow us down and give both drivers a lift back so we had 2 cars there at days end, which we were grateful for by the time we got there!!!

Tomorrow depends on the weather, but maybe Tenterfield Creek or Severn River are on the cards.

Will post a couple of pics when we get back to the smoke...

Thanks for the update Fitzy, could you please keep us informed how the river is running as I'm ment to be heading to Yetman and Gundy mid week and I'm in two minds to which way to go in the hope to have a quick flick on the way.

Shame about the lack of fish and this lousy weather interrupmting what could be some great sessions, however it's always great to search new ground like you have been doing.

Good luck to all of you today in the search for those elusive Cod.

Cheers Dave

I headed down to the Dumaresq this morning before reading Fitzy's report. Launched at the gravel pit and headed upstream. River was up a few feet from when Steve and I last went there and was flowing strongly. Still plenty of eddies to get into and have a cast but the wind was a pain without an anchor. Only fished for a few hours and then decided to call it a day when it started raining. No fish, not even a touch or a follow.

Now that I read Fitzy's report I wish I had of launched at Mingoola...

A great weekend with good company and an enjoyable, but difficult paddle.  (For an old fart like me anyways.)  Exceptionally happy to land a Birthday Murray Cod again this year.  Dirty that we couldn't get Pam one.  We didn't launch today, preferring to just do a bit of touristy driving around and checking out some new spots on Tenterfield Creek.  Came home via Killarny, Queen Mary Falls, Moogerah Dam, Rosevale, and Rosewood just to fill in some time.

We stopped in at Mole River & Tenterfield Creek on the way back. There's some water heading down Tenterfield Creek & with the rain they've had there will be water on the way down the Severn as well....recon the Dumaresq River above the Mole R will start flowing stronger in the coming days.
And, if they get much more rain Glenlyon Dam could over flow down Pike Creek into the Dumaresq R as well.

I'd be dodging the area for a bit.....

Moogerah should be spilling today.  If you're going to the falls, be careful of the river crossings, they were too deep for cars yesterday.

Here's a before and after pic showing the rise in the water level. About 2 foot but sure makes difference in the fishability of the creek.

Hell yes. That reminds me I must follow up to make sure he hasn't forgot about it. Need to check if my Cape Yorker rod has come in yet too.
