Media release: Vic Fisheries Thirteen hidden fish prove unlucky for angler9 August 12

A 63-year-old Horsham angler has been fined $450 for taking too many fish from Natimuk Lake.

The man pleaded guilty in the Horsham Magistrate’s court this week to exceeding the daily catch limit for rainbow trout.

The court heard that on May 9 this year Fisheries officers observed the accused fishing on the bank of Natimuk Lake at 11.30am. They talked to him and explained that the daily catch limit for rainbow trout was five fish.

Later that day the Fisheries officers returned and found five rainbow trout in the man’s catch bag.

Officers then searched his vehicle and found a further 13 rainbow trout in a bag concealed under a jacket on the floor of the car.

The court heard that the accused had used the excuse that “they were biting” when asked why he took more than the limit.

Magistrate Richard Pithouse found the charges proven and imposed fines of $450 plus $84 costs. He did not convict the accused but put him on an undertaking to be of good behaviour for 12 months.

Magistrate Pithouse told the accused “there is a limit and it has to be adhered to.”

Natimuk Lake has benefited greatly from Fisheries Victoria’s annual fish stocking program and received ten thousand rainbow trout last year. It has been producing good quality fish and has been a popular fishing location for Wimmera anglers over the winter months.

People who see or suspect illegal fishing should call the 13FISH fisheries offence reporting line 133 474.
