Landholders and river health reap rewards from river frontage work
12 September, 2012 - Victoria DSE
An evaluation on river frontage protection and improvement work in Victoria shows landholders believed waterway health had improved since the work, and they would recommend other landholders get involved.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) assists catchment management authorities so they can work with landholders to improve the condition of river frontages, or riparian land, through weed and pest animal management, revegetation and limiting stock access to the river bank through fencing and providing off-stream watering sites.

DSE Senior Policy Officer Peter Vollebergh said the evaluation is important to get a picture of how successful the work has been and get feedback from the landholders involved.

“River frontages are a very important part of the river’s ecology, but they also provide vital watering points to many landholders. The best way to make sure there is a balance between river health and water for stock is by working together,” Mr Vollebergh said.

“Some great work has been done with landholders to fence off river frontages, provide alternative water sources for stock, plant native vegetation and control weeds. Each year hundreds of kilometres of stream are fenced in partnerships between catchment management authorities and landholders.”

“The evaluation showed prior to works, survey respondents reported that stock had access to 86% of works sites and after works, stock had access to only 15% of sites.”

“74% of landholders indicated they considered the condition of the waterway had improved as a result of the riparian works”.

Other key findings include:

Prior to works, respondents reported that 33% of sites did not have any native tree or shrub cover. After the works all sites were found to have some cover of native trees and/or shrubs
76% of landholders indicated there had been no loss of productivity across the property as a result of the river frontage works
The works have been maintained - where fencing was erected, the fencing was still preventing stock access to sites at 86% of the sites
Landholders had been involved in long term management at 93% of sites
“The majority of landholders indicated they would strongly recommend to other landholders doing river frontage protection works. They also indicated added benefits for example, they are losing less stock in the waterway,” Mr Vollebergh said.

“Overall the Riparian works evaluation project shows in general riparian works undertaken have been successful and are being maintained.”

The evaluation was commissioned by DSE and undertaken by the Department of Primary Industries during 2010/11 to evaluate a sample of frontage sites where on ground work had been completed.  To view the report, go to www.water.vic.gov.au/riparian.

Other Australian States could follow the lead set by Victoria in this regard for similar outcomes. - Editor

What a shame Queensland cannot do something similar.  I had the pleasure of witnessing just how well this job is being done along the Ovens and Murray Rivers earlier this year.  I come home to find my local Council supporting a local farmer in fencing off river access with a barbed wire fence.  Shame on you Somerset Regional Council maybe some of the overseas junkets your Councillors take to Fiji and the US should be taken to country Victoria.
