Another year older Saturday... So on my way home from some errands I decided to stop in at my favourite suburban tarpon spot for a quick scratch and a look around....
I've been playing with some ideas of late (not my own, but good ones nevertheless :o) that revolve around fishing floating flies on sinking lines. Essentially I guess we're mimicking the action of a diving, floating minnow style hard bodied. The difference being as long as you keep stripping the fly will dive to the same depth as the fly line, before slowly rising on the pause.
I was only on the water for about 30 minutes or so, as my birthday present was getting coloured in a little later in the day, but in that time I hooked 4 or 5 nice fresh water poons, the biggest I measured was about 37cm, but they all put up a great fight on the 4wt.
The flies of choice were actually a couple of spun deer hair minnows (with marabou / ostrich feather tails) that I got as extras when I hosted a swap for snook flies (read barramundi) with a bunch of guys from the US, but they didn't last long... Mainly because of my laziness in not checking the leader between fish.

Dave, I like Tarpon they're great fighters and there's all that jumping they do. I got one at the road crossing on Dungeness creek the other day on a surface lure. Great fun, it would have gone around 40.

There are some other cool creeks around there too mate, with poons over 50cm 8)
You mentioned that there was some water in the creeks in your post,... So there might be a few other places worth checking out over towards Halifax mate ;) Head towards the landfill and you may just find a few poons as well as the odd sweetwater barra mate... seen some good ones in there :D

We've had a pretty poor wet season for the most part this year. The lagoons and wetlands are already choking with water weed...
