Improving the Lake Macdonald parking area

The access and parking areas at this picturesque lake will soon be refurbished, including resurfacing the car park areas at Lake Macdonald Park and Mary River Cod Park

The park areas will be closed while works are underway. This will be most likely be sometime in July, and will take a few days to complete. We’ll post a Recreation and Safety Notice on the Seqwater website when work begins. This upgrade has been implemented with the support of the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing.

Borumba boat ramp to be temporarily closed for upgrade

Lake Borumba, located near Imbil, is a popular fishing and skiing destination for locals and visitors alike. Feedback received during the recreation review supported an upgrade to the existing boat ramp, improving access to the lake.

With the support of the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing, the upgrade will include removing the existing single lane boat ramp, constructing a new double lane ramp and establishing a queuing area to the left of the ramp.

We have to close the boat ramp while construction is underway. Works will start Monday 11 July 2016 and take about six weeks to complete, subject to weather conditions and other unexpected delays. We understand the impact this temporary closure will have on recreation visitors and local businesses and we will work to reopen the boat ramp as soon as possible after the upgrade is complete.

The new ramp will be constructed as per Australian Standards and Department of Transport and Mains Roads’ specifications. Once complete, the upgrade will improve accessibility to the lake for boating, fishing, and water sports such as paddling and skiing.

New trails on the way

Works are about to commence on new multi-use trails at Lake Samsonvale.

Seqwater has secured funding from the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing to open to the public some existing maintenance tracks at the end of Postman’s Track, Kobble Creek. Once complete, the trails will be available for recreational activities including horse riding, walking, trail running, bird watching and mountain biking. Vehicles, motorbikes and domestic animals will not be permitted on the trails.

A car park with 10 spaces will be established at the end of Postman’s Track using an existing cleared area. Five of these spaces will accommodate horse floats.

Work is expected to commence early July for approximately four weeks, subject to weather conditions or any other unforeseen delays.

We want to hear from you!

We are currently trialling new opening hours at our lakes and parks. Don’t forget to let us know what you think of the new hours by calling 1800 737 928 or emailing recreation@seqwater.com.au.

Enjoy the great outdoors?

We live in a fascinating region, with a variety of landscapes and opportunities to explore. And what better way to enjoy our region than to get out and enjoy the great outdoors!

From mountain biking, to bird watching, to skiing, to paddling, our lakes cater for a variety of outdoor recreation activities. To find out which of our lakes allow each activity, visit the Seqwater website.

Remember, many of our lakes are used for drinking water or irrigation purposes, so always remember to only participate in approved recreation activities for that site.

Summer’s Play it safe safety campaign concludes with a safey competition.

While it’s important to play it safe all year round, the Play it safe summer safety awareness campaign ended in early April, officially closing off one of our safest summers yet. The campaign is run during the warmer months, which coincides with the busiest times at our dams, lakes and parks with visitors enjoying activities such as boating, fishing, kayaking and mountain bike riding.

The safety campaign features Seqwater’s honorary Ranger Joe who reminds us that still water can still be risky and encourages visitors to check the safety tips and notices at Seqwater’s website before leaving home.

This year also saw Seqwater invent a brand new word and launch an eight week online competition in February. The competition, called #safey – encouraged visitors to post a #safey– a selfie of themselves undertaking a safe behaviour while having fun at one of our sites.

This competition received an enormous response with more than 900 entries received and a huge audience of supporters. It was fantastic to see so many people sharing their experiences of having fun while playing it safe. On the ground, our ranger team witnessed first-hand the fun that was being had by those taking their #safeys and hoping to win the BCF gift voucher or GoPro for the #safey of the week.

On behalf of the entire Seqwater team, thank you for your part in playing it safe at our dams, lakes and parks. Remember to keep it up all year round.

Did you know…

We recently established two designated stop off points on Lake Wivenhoe for boats and paddle craft. These scenic stop off points are only accessible from the water and are located at McKeys Hill to the north-east of the lake and McGraths Bay in the south-west. Each rest area has a picnic table, rubbish bin and toilet for the convenience of visitors. Signage and on-water buoys have been installed to provide direction to these areas for boaties. Download the stop off point map via our website for more information.
