OK, Back to Barra- How long before they take a lure again ?
« on: September 24, 2010, 08:57:12 PM »
Well we've had some unfortunate happenings on the site lately and some good info went out into space,..

So here's a question.

How long before a barra takes a lure again ?

This was prompted by an excited conversation this afternoon with a mate. 3 of them trolling a section of one of our local stocked weirs last night.  They've been getting a few in the same area lately. One gets a 73cm and had a dirty yellow tag in it. Tag was cleaned up, and number noted. Nothing special here yet.

One hour & 15 minutes later another fish on deck. Measured at 73cm, hmmm, that's uncanny, it's the same as the last one.

When they turned it over, there's a shiny cleaned up tag hanging off the side. Yep. Same number, same fish.

Both times it had well and truly inhaled a hard body on the troll. It was also caught in exactly the same spot (part of a drop off ledge from 2m down to 3.5m) despite being released a 50 yards or so away the first time due to drifting after they'd boated it.

Personally, I haven't experienced this. I've always been of the opinon they go away and sulk for... whatever period of time,, days/weeks ?

Even a missed fish, once they've felt the hooks, it's not very often they come back again for a second go.

Thanks for sharing Dicko!

A question I have ask myself on many occasions. My thoughts were similar to what you were also pondering. Sulking after a strange and uncomfortable experience of tug of war between angler and fish.

I suppose in some land locked invironments whether it would be an impoundment or an esturary system held back by a weir, resources of food can change from hour to hour, day to day just like tidal areas. It would also depend on the fishes mood and mode, whether it has just fed or what stage of digestion the fish is in. If fish were aggressively feeding due to them knowing of a change in weather conditions, well I guess it is possible to catch a Barra that's not, once bitten twice shy.

Cheers Dave

Dicko,
It has happened aplenty with the same fish being caught, even moments, or minutes later. I think the contributing factor is pinnacle fish handling skills. A barra that is dropped on it's head won't be biting the lure ten minutes later.

Well there you go, I didn't realise it was such a common occurence.

I'll have to do a bit more barra fishing.

I wouldn't say it's common, but there are countless stories just like yours.
Cheers,
