Downstream of the Gorge Weir 1970s

http://www.sweetwaterfishing.com.au/Forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=586

Dad and I man handling the punt downstream through rapids below the Gorge Weir ~1974, pre Clare Weir (downstream) and dirty Burdekin Dan (upstream) the river flowed clear in those days and was full of wild barra, sooties and the occassional Jack not to mention Tarpon, Gaint Herring, Silver Biddies, Mullet, River Walers and all the other migratory fish that used to push all the way upstream before the lower Clare weir were constructed in the late 70's.   All our gear was Abu 'Parazoom' rods and closed faced reels - killers and hilos were our favoured barra lures and we often used big spinners (also Abu), floppies and even SPs (the early mister twisters) on the sooties.  There would of been a firearm or two in the boat (one on dads hip) for pigs and lizards - though the crocs in those days were pretty respectful of humans - dad mainly used his Berretta for shooting lures out of trees - worked a treat too! (he did drill the odd one) LOL

G'day Jim,

I've got some more recent pics of Gorge Weir here somewhere. Locals tell me its croc country on both sides. I flew over it not long back & notices an off stream storage adjacent to the wier, been wondering in there's any worth while fishing above it.  :?) Should be sooty grunter up there I'm thinking.....
