Unless you're targetting them in designated impoundments that are stocked with Mary River Cod, it is an offence to target them in the wild as they an endangered species and huge fines apply if you are caught with one in your possession.

As for stocked impoundment MRC, all year round, however if they are like their cousins, the Murray Cod, now into Spring in my opinion.

I wonder if asking for directions to catch Mary River Cod where they are protected could be seen as intent under the Act's definition of "take"? ???

Not a dig at Childersfish, just an observation of how the gubberment of the day can interpret so many meanings into the word "take".   Shoot, I bought some 5/8oz Spinnerbaits from Bassman the other day, does that show an intention to conspire to pervert the course of the fishery?  I could be in the chit. :-\

If you were talking about the MRC I caught a little while back, I was targeting bass in the MR before the bass closure came in :youbeauty.  The MRC was a geniune bycatch and a welcome one.  Happy to see them so healthy in the MR system after the floods.

Hi Steve, yep, I enjoyed your post and loved the pic of the cod. It's what promted me to ask the question, i wouldn't mind catching one. I also know where they are stocked in rivers but don't chase em. I dug around the link i was sent by Steve and have looked into a few more areas and am still unable to find where it says you cannot fish for MRC? It says cannot take unless from certain impoundments. Why you'd want to take such a beautiful fish is beyond me but each to their own. even when an article states MRC are protected it still says they are a no take fish. That becomes a bit more cloudy when it goes on to say "if you accidentally catch one return it to the water immediately".
Apologies for the cheeky misuse of your post. It seemed a logical response to aussiebassers question about, "is it intent if you ask for directions to find them. There's nothing like a picture of a bloke holding a fish to prove intent. Then again i think we've just proven otherwise ey?  :youbeauty
Cheers
John

??? what about the level of intent, when there are set lines through out the Obi Obi Gorge??? does the gubberment really care  ::)
I am sure those 10mt lengths of 80lb line with 5/0 hooks on them were meant for Bass.

Set lines, Springers, droppers, whatever you/they call the bloody things it amazes me that there are still so many knuckle draggers about. I hear banjo's.

Been saying it for ages , any of of Cod species regulations are a joke at best ,offer very little in the way of protection ,  even during the closed season . Not good enough IMO

If you see a dropper, cut the pucker down.

You can report it and it may get looked into one day.
