Bets advise that I would give first up is to go out and have a play. No rods, reels, lures......nothing.

Get used to the kayak and its balance points.

Now start thinking about what YOU REALLY need.

What ever you decide, keep it minimal and leach everything.

The first thing i would get would be a good PFD if you haven't got one.  It gives alot more confidence when on the water.

Also  give some thought on where you will be fishing to eg. dams, bays, estuary and rivers.  That will help you decide on what gear you mite need and what you won't.

I too have only started yak fishing.  I carry 2 Small Plateu trays for lures and sp jigs, 2 rods using 1 for trolling, pliers, scissors, leader, tape and lure retrevial device.  Thats does the job fine in the rivers.

Atm though i'm dam fishing so i'll be looking at getting a fish finder and trolley to get those harder to reach places. :D

I hope this helps and good luck.

cheers Brad.

Be sure to come to the Wivenhoe Kayak Convention in September. There will be over 100 decked out kayaks there to look at plenty to test paddle. Also tons of advice from those with more experience.
