Discover the basics of fishing these school holidays at Gaden Trout Hatchery
12 Sep 2012 - NSW Fisheries

Children keen on fishing and looking for a bit of excitement and fun this school holidays can learn the basics of recreational fishing at a Department Primary Industries (DPI) fishing workshop at Gaden Trout Hatchery, Jindabyne during the September school holidays.

DPI Education Officer, Stephen Thurstan, said two fishing workshops being held at DPI’s most southern trout hatchery during the school holidays would give children aged between 8 and 14 years the chance to learn basic fishing skills.

The fishing workshop program is one of many initiatives implemented by the NSW Government using funds from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trusts to improve fishing opportunities across the State.

"Youngsters attending will learn about recreational fishing rules and regulations, sustainable fishing practices, native and introduced fish species and aquatic habitats," Mr Thurstan said.

The workshops will be held on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 September at the Gaden Trout Hatchery, Kosciusko Road, Jindabyne from 10am to 3pm.

"Gaden Trout Hatchery, on the banks of the beautiful Thredbo River just 10 minutes from Jindabyne, is the perfect place for community groups to learn more about trout fishing," Mr Thurstan said.

"Participants in the workshop will get to fish in a special pond full of hungry rainbow trout weighing more than a kilogram and will have a tour of the hatchery, which is full of baby trout at the moment."

The fishing workshop program is assisted by local Fishcare Volunteers, who are an important part in the running of the program across NSW and highly valued in teaching the next generation of anglers about one of Australia’s favorite pastimes.

Each workshop costs $40 a child, which includes a quality rod and reel, hooksafe, tackle box, shirt, hat and a BBQ lunch.

Parents are encouraged to ensure children participating have plenty of sunscreen, bring along a drink bottle for water and wear enclosed footwear.

Numbers are limited to a maximum of 25 children a day and bookings are essential.

To secure a place please call Stephen Thurstan on 0438 245 190 by September 21.
