Paradise Dam review underway

Minister for Water Supply Mark McArdle expects to see an interim draft report into the Paradise Dam repair bill from the New South Wales Department of Public Works by 22 July.

The NSW Government department has been granted an extension of one week to produce its interim independent review, with the final report expected to be delivered by 9 August 2013.

The Queensland Government commissioned the NSW government department to investigate why Paradise Dam, south-west of Bundaberg, was so badly damaged in the January 2013 floods.

“The review will investigate if engineering construction standards were met and if SunWater's response after earlier floods was adequate,” Mr McArdle said.

“The department has acknowledged that the size of this task for the reviewer is immense with more than a thousand pages in total of technical material alone.

“Taking this into consideration, the draft and final reports have been delayed by one week to ensure we have a conclusion to the issue sooner rather than later.”

Mr McArdle said the estimated cost of repairing Paradise Dam also formed a large part of the investigation.

“The estimated costs of repair for phases one and two are $6 million and $17.7 million respectively, while the cost of phase three is estimated at $1.9 million,” he said.

“It is really concerning to me that a dam built in 2005 is in such a state. We need to figure out what happened and why.

“This investigation commissioned by the Newman Government will give the public confidence that these matters are reviewed in an open and transparent way.”
