Copeton Dam
« on: November 28, 2010, 03:35:45 PM »
G'Day crew,
Anyone fished Copeton lately? I'm going to head over that way the week after next and looking at fishing either Copeton or Glen Lyon. Cod are the main target.
Cheers,
JD

fishing is not essential to life, it's much more important

Check the Cod season in NSW first, many of their stocked impoundments they wont let you fish in the closed season. Might make it Glen Lyon by default.

It's currently Cod Closed Season so I'd hope there's no reports of cod being caught for a few more days.  :)

Recently in the area, I did hear of some good captures of Golden Perch & Redfin on jigs. No info on general area or depths however.

Not much mate, but I hope it helps.

Fitz,
I spoke to Brian Dare at Glen Lyon and he reckons that NSW will remove the seasonal closure for Cod next year. It used to be all waters in NSW but that is due to change. In any case I think I'll be going to Glen Lyon; Brian's a good bloke and I've got a mate who has a place right on the dam.
Cheers mate,
JD

Was at Glen Lyon over the weekend. Plenty of water there at the moment.  :thumbsup

It makes sense to allow recreational angling in stocked lakes/dams & leave the wild fish alone. Fingers crossed it happens, won't be good for Glenlyon tho, as alot on NSW folks head up to Qld in closed season to catch a cod, a change will see numbers at Glenlyon fall.

Hope you get a few JD.  :thumb

G'Day Fitzy,
Looks like I'll be off to Glen Lyon mate, I prefer it there anyway. I've got a mate who has 40acres on the dam itself so he's pretty switched on. I'll let you know how it goes.
Cheers,
JD

Dare I say -
but there's no way whatsoever that NSW will rescind the cod closed season.
Related trivia: An Amrose Dare from Leeton always made the local newspapers with pictures of clotheslines staggering
from the weight of cod brought back from Darling river trips.

Related trivia:

There has been whispers they will allow fishing in some stocked dams during the closed season. Problem is of course most of the stocked dams are on the natural range of the fish. Makes it pretty hard. I do believe they allowed bass fishing on stocked dams the last year or two during closed season, so the precedent is there.

I was talking to a NSW fisheries officer recently.  If you own a farm in NSW, and pay to put in a dam, then buy fingerlings to stock the dam, you still have to abide by the closed season, size and bag limits.  You also need a fishing licence to fish in you own dam.  Sounded a bit weird to me, but the fisheries have the right to enter your property to ensure you are obeying the laws.

G'Day Dale, they must be the same people who wanted to farmers to pay for the raain that falls on their property deeming that the rain, once it touches the ground belongs to the government. If you are able to work out that one you should have a job in the State government. The home of small minds.

G'Day Harro,
That sort of mentality is still alive; admittedly struggling to stay that way, but I bumped a couple of blokes along the Dumaresq a while back who complained that "some greenies in kayaks had cut all their droppers." I pointed out that they had probably been done a favour. Fisheries would take a dim view of that sort of thing and the penalties are rather harsh. I hope that Dare chap was no relation to Brian??

Had one of those moments many years ago when I came across a gill net set across the barcoo at Coolah. Mate and I had swum the river to free it an hauled it up the bank, then set to cutting cutting out any live fish and tossing them back in. Mate says, what do you think fisheries would say if they saw us now? - Pile of dead yella's on the bank, net at our feet! Oops! finished the job in lightening fast time and got the heck outta there!
