Title: Future for Wyaralong dam ?
Post by: bushwacker on October 08, 2010, 06:10:05 AM
Just wanted to know if anyone can give us any info for the boating / fishing side of the new Wyaralong dam ?

It would be great to get it stocked and going for future fishing as i live in beaudesert and its only 10 min out of town so it would be perfect only a qauter of the time to get to maroon but i have a feeling its only going to be hassles with paper work for fisho's.

thanks

steve

Fisho's were basically ignored during the consultation process, every other community group you can think of was asked to comment / suggest what should go in by way of community access and facilities, so I think that might give you a hint.

I do remember something about hook free fishing being allowed in certain areas, so you can probably drop in some red claw pots once the midnight stocking group has been past, otherwise its a just enjoy the scenery job I suspect.

Maybe for a year or 3 no fishing wouldnt be that bad if it was to be stocked to give everything a chance to settle in and grow but honestly whats this world comming to ? It would be another great spot for familys and friends to camp and fish and explore but those sort of values apparently dont exist any more to the government.

The bromelton off streem storage is a fair size man made lake and is closed to all public access now but i had a sticky when it wasnt and my god there is allot of water there for a backup water supply,  not many people are very happy with that even still!

If wyaralong or any new dam (not that thats going to happen thanks mr garrett) where to be catch and release only would not that sway anyone to open these last new water holes up to the public ?

Heard a bit of chatter floating around the local council that they are catching fish (presumably bass) below the wall and moving them into the main storage basin. i have no clue how effective that will be, also was told that this dam is to be a very fish friendly dam with fish ladders that actually work below the wall somewhere .. somehow i think most of it is exactly what it is "talk" but anyway we will see what happens.

About 3 weeks ago Nuggett went to an opening day tour and presentation. He said that he was told that it would be leccy, sail, paddle only and it would be stocked. They will be using a fish lift that i think sounded similar to the one that is going into the Hinze.Apparently it will allow both upstream and downstream migration plus the ability to cull out noxious species.
 Cheers

It would not suprise me the least if it ended up full of carp . the logan river you dont go bass fishing you go carp fishing and if your lucky enough to catch a bass or cattie or extremly rare cod then its a majore plus ... the teviot brook is much the same i suspect .... In saying that we have caught quite a number of bass at times in and around carp so i guess it could go either way.

The new fish ladders sound interesting ....

According to the local rag the new Wyaralong dam is already at 60% full ......

Thats either an absolute sh!t tin of water has run in or its a bit of a fizzer in terms of size/depth for a dam.

Your  thoughts ?

Its not huge as dams go, I would have thought captain Bligh would have been all over the media once it started to fill though.

Although it was always my gut feeling that Traveston was the sacrificial red herring to keep the greenies busy while they snuck this one in under the radar. Maybe she is keeping quiet, doesn't want to encourage stories of heritage sites etc getting flooded for the first time.

G'Day Binder,

Wyralong & Glendower Dams have been on the drawing board for well over a decade, nothing top secret about either.   8)

A special LAFMA meeting was held last Tuesday night(17.7.2012) for organising the raising of funds for fish stocking in Wyaralong Dam. A call for more volunteers was made for more involvement in planning of events, grant acquisitions and other methods of fund raising. The general public will get their first chance to help this Saturday(28th of July) by supporting the crew by buying a sausage outside Bunnings at Browns Plains.

Cheers,
Dave.

I don't think every fisher person in Brisbane will be coming to your lure expo Fitzy...

Having said that, I will definitely be there... ;)

Agreed.  I bet there will be more fishos at Fernvale than at that hardware store tho  ;) Timing bad for me, or I would have gone and bought a couple of snags to help out.

Selling bangers at Bunnings doesn't attract fishos, unless a fish needs to go there for something else. I would see the value being about general public awareness of the wyralong dam program and maybe attract some new blood from the non-fishos to get involved.

Snags sizzles are ok for making a few bucks, but as a sustainable funding source to run a stocking program it becomes a drain on limited resources (ie membership) from my experience. Did it alot years ago (pre SIP), we worked it out that if the 10 people who gave up their whole day + fuel + lost wages etc threw in the $50 each they were out of pocket you'd earn as much & everyone got to go fishing or the kids footy etc...

If they have asked I could have given them a space at Fernvale to promote their program, like the BP Dam group did.  :youbeauty

Cheers,

fitz..

The LAFMA group only got the Bunnings show as another group pulled out.

Bad timing for me as I can not assist them on the weekend as well.

On the side have heard up to and over 1K being made in profits if all goes well.

Next meeting fro LAMFA is on Tuesday 14 August, 7 pm @ Beaudesert RSL, with the main topic being fund raising events.

Come along if your interested and if you wanna join, membership is 20 bucks.

I'll be working at Bunnings Snag Table on Saturday and will be at Fernvale on Sunday.  Bugger the lawn!

Let's hope there's still enough goodies for sale on Sunday to keep an Old Tackle Rat happy

I spoke to our Treasurer , Glen this morning and although he hasn't done a full reconcilliation yet, he's thinking we cleared around $1700 for the day.  Looks like it was well worth the effort.

What an excellent result.
