Title: Shrimps
Post by: PJD on August 14, 2015, 10:08:16 PM
Hi guys
If anyone is interested, I was in the Mitre 10 at Fernvale and they are now selling big shrimps.  $1.60 each or 10 for $15 I think
Some were big enough to cook up for lunch
Cheers

I didn't think they could sell yabbies as bait?  I see another tackle shop advertising them.  If anyone has their own dam it's worth putting some shrimp in them.  I put some in a farm dam a few years ago and it's  got a good supply now.  I also tried on my misses family Farms muddy creek last year and got good numbers.  50 plus a pull.  Worth trying any stream.

Legal to use blueclaw but not live redclaw outside their natual range, redclaw flesh is ok.
Cheapest place for live shrimp is Arratula redclaw farms $35 per hundred last time I got some.He delivers to Bne gold and sunny coasts once a week.
 Cheers

Every leslie dam fishing report i see without fail reports " good catches on saltwater yabbies"

I questioned it but left it alone .... i did read somewhere as long as they are frozen but im still a bit confused...

i was under the assumption of what Elops said

Agree, I'm doubtful as any harm done. I mean salt water yabbies have been used in sweetwater lakes forever & a day with no negative impact that I'm aware if. Nor do I understand any potential impact....

Using marine baits in freshwaters

The use of baits from marine (saltwater) environment is prohibited unless the bait has been frozen, cooked or preserved. This is to prevent the spread of disease and parasites in Queensland's freshwater systems, and to protect native fish populations and the future viability of freshwater fish stocking programs.

Live bait

The use of fish and crustaceans such as spangled perch, redclaw crayfish, shrimp and yabbies as bait (dead or alive) is prohibited outside their natural environment or range. This is to prevent species from becoming established in foreign habitats and causing environmental damage. Currently three species can be used as live bait. They are:

redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) - native to the Gulf of Carpentaria Drainage Division and some river basins in the far northern portion of the East Coast Drainage Division. Redclaw can be used as bait only in these areas

shrimp (Macrobrachium australiensis) - found throughout Queensland and can be used as bait in all areas of the state

yabby (blueclaw crayfish) (Cherax destructor) - found naturally in the Murray-Darling, Lake Eyre and Bulloo-Bancannia Drainage Divisions, and some river basins in the East Coast Drainage Division. Yabbies can be used as bait only in these areas.
