Title: Freshwater Bag Limits / Size limits - Qld Fisheries Review
Post by: Sweetwater on May 14, 2013, 09:30:18 PM
To handle the "off topic" discussion on another thread, here's a topic to handle everyone's thoughts on:

- Bag limits
- Size limits
- Slot size limits

So what do you think on bag limits for freshwater fish?

Keep them as is? Change them? If so what to?

Bass 35cm mininium and in possession of at least 5 in stocked dams and remain at 2 in all other waters.
Yellas and silvers and  rhe same,
Tandans and other species  unchanged.
 cheers

Being as the tight limits in NSW on silvers, perhaps they warrant a look in QLD as well, been 20 years since I fished for them in western rivers so I have no idea what the numbers are like in the wild. Also if they tighten up the limits, perhaps I'll stop getting people wanting me to stock the useless things because "your allowed to take 5 of them", - even they dont catch them anyway  ;D

As I said in the other thread, 5 for bass in impoundments, 35cm minimum as Ray suggests I'd support as well.

Yella's is fine at 10, problem is whether or not you will be able to stock them in the future. They also have a great growth rate where they " take" meaning quick replacement if you do have a healthy amount of fisho's taking them home for a feed.
Also have to admit - Fish that dont want to go downstream has got to be very attractive for a stocking group after the last few years here!

I would like to see a boat limit. If dad and mum and 2 kids go fishing they can take home 40 golden perch and 8 bass, same goes when there is one bloke and 3 of his mates in the boat. I know the law says in possession but what about when people are on holidays or retired and go fishing several times a week and take fish each time. How many people have heard of fisheries going to joe bloggs house to see what he has in his freezer.
I would like to see golden perch dropped to 5, and bass stay at 2 but over 35cm and rest stay the same.
If people take only thier limit and eat them quickly they can always go fishing again.

The main reason for size limits is so that fish can breed at least once before they are of legal size.  Not sure of the reason for size limits on stocked fish that cannot breed.  However, I would support an increased size limit to 35mm for Bass, Golden Perch and Silver Perch.  I would like to see a blanket, in possession limit of 10 fish per angler comprising any mix of Bass, Golden Perch and Silver Perch in Stocked Impoundments.

I've always liked the idea of an upper limit for bass ala barra. Say no take of anything over 50cm. Now I don't know the particulars of bass, but to me, the idea of protecting the big ones so they are around for longer makes for a big boost in appeal to existing fisheries. Whether it's an issue with them killing smaller recent stocks or if they stop breeding after a time I don't know. But more, bigger bass to me is always a good idea :)

Other than that, I have no problem with existing rules, I've only ever taken 1 bass in my fishing life for the table, not my cup of tea but the wife wanted to try one :)

Not wishing to appear negative, but until Fisheries step up to the issue of enforcemnt it matters little about slot size, and bag limits. If they raided a few caravan parks they'd probably develop writers cramp from all the infringment notices thay'd write, and need a B-Double to cart away the evidence. I see at least one bloke up here with 3 freezers. Nobody eats that much ice cream.

Fisheries have been raiding the grey nomads at hervey bay hard the last few years. Doing them in the van parks for being over possession limits (freezer full of fish from the holiday to go home)

The total limit of 10 has Merit Dale, not to fussed on boat limits, its discrimination based on income in my opinion.

Still not convinced on slot limits for any species, yeah might see more trophy fish around, might result in only aged fish breeding to, which is not a desirable situation either. Academic to me anyway, I fish for stocked fish mostly.

I would like to see the Bass limit raised to 5 and the Yellowbelly imit lowered to 5 and leave the Silvers at 5, this is for stocked waters/dams. It will take at least one more generation before the "bag fillers" have gone and it seem's to me the bigger the bag limits - the more they take. I would also like to see in plain english that the taking of any stocked fish is only for one's self, not taken to the local pub and given away just because you like catching fish.

Still falls under "YOUR" possession limit doesn't it ? just means the pie is a bit smaller from that trip then I suppose in theory.

Slot limit maybe but a combined would get lost in translation too easily I think.

Just call a spade a spade I don't think the yellow belly limit need be changed at all but for put and take fisheries I cannot see why the bass limit shouldn't be raised to 5 as long as the purchases of sip permits reflects the capability to sustain the fish stocks.

If hobbles in with the beer I see no problem.

Whatever the limits are , they need to be policed more , I get out and fish at least once a fortnight , weather it be from my boat, kayak or on foot for thirty odd years and I have never been questioned by fisheries or any other authority . To be honest I haven't even seen them in the last ten. The problem is there is to many wankers around and no mater what size or bag limits are put in place the same people are going to take to many or to small a fish or take in no take periods.

It's all good provided he hobbles in with the beer.
