2014 Australian Lure & Fly Expo
Just to let everyone know...
Within days of the 2013 expo, I was into organising the 2014 expo. At this stage I won't pre-empt anything, however other, larger venue options are being looked at.
At this stage the expo will most likely be in early July.
Lure of the Year Awards
The Lure Awards will be further refined. There will be:
- Commercial Lure Of The Year
- Cottage Lure Of The Year
- Most Artistic
Judging for these will be of peer review, in that each exhibitor at the expo will be given a voting form to complete. Obviously some lure makers attending may give their own lures a vote, so a 3, 2, 1 system will be used and the points tallied.
Nominations will be accepted from any lure maker in Australia, however only stall holders at the expo will be able to vote.
Lure Of the Year - Cottage & Commercial
All commercial & cottage lures nominated will be retained & sold auctioned later, the winning lures will stay in a display cabinet for eternity (Hall Of Fame). Further definition of what constitutes a "Commercial" and "Cottage" lure will be forthcoming, however there will without a doubt be some component relating to size of production runs, consistency of make, availability to general public etc.
Most Artistic Lure - submissions will be accepted from any lure maker in Australia either in person or by post. Non winning lures will be given back to the maker if they are there to collect them at the end of the expo, however the winning lure WILL be retained for the hall of fame. I will not be posting / freighting lures across the country (& taking responsibilty for breakages).
If you're not prepared to accept these conditions, you may not enter in person or by post. Any lures sent to me under other circumstances will be deemed to be a gift & will be put into someone's collection or sold/auctioned off.
Hall Of Fame
I will be coming up with a nomination form for the Hall Of Fame
There are no specific categories for these & a category may be considered based upon the quality of a nomination.
In 2014 there were 3 inductees into the Hall Of Fame
Trecor McFeeters - Iconic Australian Lure Maker
Rod Harrison - for a lifetime of promoting Lure & Fly Fishing in Australia
Lake Mulwala - Iconic Australian Lure Fishery
Lure Casting Shootout
I'm seriously looking into the viability of hosting Qld's first ever serious indoor Lure Casting Championships to be held at the Expo. The venue & insurance will have a bearing on this, however your comments / feedback are sought regarding this concept.
There is other new & exciting ideas planned. These will be let out of the bag as info becomes clearer.
All in all, I'm pretty excited about what's in the pipeline for 2014.
If you have any questions, comments or feedback, this is the place to put them. I'm not interested in rants from non-de-plumes or emails from random gmail / hotmail accounts etc. If you've got some constructive comments, either phone me, email me from a a real email address or post up here.

Hi fitzy,
This taken from another forum,
I don,t want yo put the moco on but iv,e just spoken with Cheryl from ipswich showgrounds and theres a circus on at the same time as the expo. N o pre camp bookings will be taken and as they booked first they have thken most of the camping room. There may be very limited space for those wanting to camp like myself but no promises. And it,s $ 20 pr night, Might have to try something else. For those of you who have done this before, Any ideas HELP. I want to go.
were you aware of the circus in town and do you think it may be a problem with both events on same weekend in same premises ?
Cheers Tony

Hi TP,
No i don't see a problem. Yes there is a circus on the same weekend, down the bottom of the showgrounds. However showgrounds staff said they would move other campers up on the grassed area near the reception centre. :tick
Maybe advise people from other forums to bring any questions here to save you being a pidgeon. :)
Cheers,
fitz..

I recon your lurecasting shootout is a brilliant idea Fitzy, how about a flycasting comp as well?
-
Fitzy, Brisbane Fly Fishing Club is keen to attend this year again. Had a great time last year.
If you are thinking of a casting comp, would be happy to organise it if you want.
Cheers

Would love to be able to have a fly casting comp, but would need a ton of space (250+ feet) to do it to allow for WH&S issues, safety fencing etc. When the venue costs thousands of dollars to hire, the return is minimal. However if it is possible to work it in & there's not exhibitors still needing floor space I will make it happen.
The Brisbane Fly Fishing Club are again more than welcome to attend :tick

Thanks fitzy. And we'l make sure we are a bit earlier this year :)

A simple question - unless I'm mistaken, did you realise 8th August is a Friday?
I don't know how that will affect exhibitors having to travel or sales.
Tony.
