The North East Catchment Management Authority is using recreational fishing licence fees to improve fish habitat in the Ovens River, south of Wangaratta.
Five 'motel' structures (see photo) have been built and placed into the river over a 100m stretch. Two more will be installed in coming weeks.
The 'motels' are held in position by 6m piles to prevent movement during high flows.
To provide more diverse habitat, 35 root balls have also been placed into the river.
Year one of the project is now 90 per cent complete.
This work complements the CMA's other activities along the Ovens River, including a partial width fishway and bankside weed management.

What a bloody shame that Queensland's authorities are trying hard to lock us out of the rivers, while Victoria is enhancing them.

I grew up fishing the Ovens, and my nephew now works as a Ranger down there. It is amazing what they are doing for the Ovens and the Murray. I'm working on better access for a local river and all I'm getting is emails from Council saying its a State Government issue and emails from State Government MP saying it's a Council issue. If it wasn't so serious, it would be pathetic. I've finally had Council admit it is their juristiction, but they're saying they won't do anything about it.
