How much water is too much?
« on: March 03, 2012, 12:30:27 PM »
I guys,  I have only been able to get out two or three time since all that water went through the creeks a little while back and was wondering what thoughts people have on the floods and where fish end up.

The reason I ask is some of the spots I like to visit in the past, have been produced so well that I was starting to thing I was being spoilt.  The Last month or so has proved that maybe I was!!!  8)

I have tried higher up, middle, bottom of the creek I have had so much luck with and have had a very hard time of it.  Now there was so much water that went through I wonder if this was a chance for the fish to head alot further up the creek or did they get washed right down to the salt and are hanging around down further.

They gotta be in there somewhere and although this creek has had some pressure of late(more than I have ever seen) I have been unable at this time to find the point at which they have called home.

Previous flooding events may have not made it so difficult to find the fish though this was most likely because of fish being washed out of Sommerset, Wivenhoe and North Pine.  So much fish that you couldn't help but get everywhere.

What have you guys found?  Have you been seeing what I have?  Does that much water push them all the way down to teh salt then they are just hanging further down or something.

Cheers

Geoff

In some of the creeks the only good times is the small window of opportunity from when the creek slows down till the next heavy downpour, when you are retired you can cash in on this ;D

I've found this summer to be one of the hardest for the creeks.  And as I don't have the opportunity as Dino (b@#$%rd) has of going when the planets align makes it more difficult. I'm not sure if the big ones stay in the upper reaches as I haven't heard of any reports, only lots of babys.  I pulled seven (20-25cm) out of a tiny hole a month ago. Not much to brag about since.

I saw some photos of some BIG bass caught in Tingalpa Creek after some water releases from Leslie Harrison Dam. Apparently still catching good numbers up there.

Yeah cheers and thanks guys.  They gotta be somewhere in the system so it is just a matter of finding them and maybe  changing tactics.  I will try further up the system in a week or two as long as it doesn't rain again and flood everything out again.

Tingalpa Creek hey.  Thanks for the tip Fitzy, reckon some of them would have been Wivenhoe/Sommerset fish in there too from last year.

Cheers

I find that after a flood the fishing patten changes.  Weather it is a new batch of fish in the redesigned snags or the old fish settling in to their new homes I am not sure.  But it takes a few weeks from what I see.

It is always a challenge and if you are mobile on the water from a Kayak  you soon get to read the new design.

Then a mate comes along and throws in the barometer factor, too hot , too cold, too much insect repellant.

Still a lot of fun sussing it all out, hey
