NSW's Travelling Stock Routes?
« on: August 08, 2015, 07:48:56 AM »
G'day SW,

I received a concerning phone call last night from a good mate, an avid angler, lure maker and general all round bushy from the Texas region regarding what might the future hold for the NSW Travelling Stock Routes. Not very savvy on the computer, he gave me enough information to do some research overnight.

In short the NSW government are reviewing the use of these TSR's within the state in the hope to sell off this valuable land which drovers still use today. There is a lobby group made up of farmers, grazers and other stakeholders who wish to continue to use these routes to fatten stock and to use for the droving of stock to and from markets and sale yards. The group is called CARRTS (Combined Action to Retain Routes for Travelling Stock). President Ray Penfold, a grazer himself is leading the charge against the TSR's closures with support from many groups including shooting and fishing parties.

What does this mean for recreational anglers? Many stock routes follow rivers and creeks to water cattle and intern are the life line to which we access these water systems to fish. Once these TSR's change hands of either management or ownership, the gates will be closed and locked at reserves for public access. Once they are closed that will be it for the return of the TSR's. Many stocking groups stock these river systems with fish from the use of public money and we wish to retain our right to gain access to these river systems via reserves on TSR's. CARRTS are compiling signatures of support petitioning against the sell off. To support CARRTS and sign the petition please visit their Face book page and download the petition.

For more information about the future of NSW Travelling Stock Routes view ABC's Landline interview by clicking onto this link.  http://www.abc.net.au/landline/content/2015/s4285160.htm

Meanwhile in Queensland there's a plan to put the management of TSRs into the hands of local councils instead of the state government. Legislation will be introduced into the Queensland parliament early next year.

I for one don't wish to see the end of another Australian tradition and I hope that the Sweetwater community will rally behind CARRTS in solidarity and support.

Kind regards

Bracey!

Yep, not good. This has been on the cards for a few years now in NSW, we've been posting updates here on sweetwater.

In Qld, the state govt owns virtually all reserves along water ways, however these have traditionally been managed by local councils.
Eg, the reserve at Greenup Weir on the MacIntyre Brook is owned by Qld Govt, but is managed by Southern Downs Regional Council who have decided to "temporarily" close access to the reserve. They cannot permanently close the reserve without DNRM or DERM or whatever they're calling themselves now, but a permanent "temporary" closure seems to be in place. Total load of BS.

Leases may be taken out over some reserves for specific purposed, eg grazing of cattle, however public access through these reserves that are leased cannot be denied. They may be fenced & gated, but not locked. Noting that there are numerous tenure types and the example above is not always the case.
