Lake rescue highlights the importance of lifejackets

19 January 2015    - Seqwater

Following the rescue of a kayaker on Lake Wyaralong this afternoon, Seqwater is reminding the community to wear lifejackets when boating or paddling.

Seqwater Acting Chief Executive Officer Jim Pruss said a Seqwater ranger had aided a member of the public who had fallen in the lake, south of Brisbane, and experienced difficulty in staying above the water.

“It is important that boaters and paddlers plan ahead and take all the necessary precautions, including wearing a lifejacket,” Mr Pruss said.

“Our rangers patrol our lakes but they can’t be everywhere. It was extremely fortunate that today, our ranger was in close enough proximity to assist.”

Mr Pruss said Seqwater’s summer Play it Safe campaign reminded the community of the need to take care around our lakes and catchments.

“Our dams and catchments are natural environments with all the inherent dangers. Taking the time to get yourself up to date with lake conditions and ensuring you take the appropriate precautions when you visit can help us keep our lakes safe.

“More than one-third of all drowning deaths in Australia occurred in inland waterway locations in 2013/14 so it is important to remember still water still poses risks.”
