NEWS Well the Snowy Mountains Trout Festival is over for another year, and most anglers had a great time, and those complaining stated the weather could have been a little warmer and I can agree with that as we have had more rain and snow on the peaks last week and some mornings on the water were very winter like.
For more information on the competition results go to www.troutfestival.com
Well this week the weather should warm up with temperatures next weekend expected to be in the 30’s so a little warmer than last Saturdays maximum or 14 degrees C.
The water release from Jindabyne Dam down the Snowy River has been spectacular but has resulted in a small drop in the water level of Lake Jindabyne by about a foot but not as low as expected due to the inflow from the rain last week. The release will be slowly reduced from today and is due to finish on the 12th November. After that the lake will stabilize and maybe even rise again with normal inflows and rainfall.
The best fishing at the moment is still on the lake and there are still plenty of fish being caught. Scrub worms are really going well at the moment and evening spinning and fly fishing is also improving.
The boat trolling has had good and bad days and the best trolling will be early in the week as later in the week the warm northerlies may slow down the boat trolling.
On the rivers the water levels have receded and the water is clear and the fishing is starting to improve again with a few more reports of better dry fly fishing.
All in all this week will be one of good and bad and you just need to look at the best method for the conditions if you want to catch a trout.
Call into my shop and we will help you out if you’re a little confused.

LAKE LEVEL and TEMPERATUREThe reported level at the moment is about 76% and falling due to the release from Jindabyne Dam.  The water temperature has risen to14 degrees C which is still colder than last year by a few degrees.
Have a look at the photos on my web site and you will see just how high the water level is.

Let’s have a look at what the fishing is going to be like over the next few weeks.

Trolling.
Boat trollers hate it when the water levels drop suddenly but this should not be the case at the moment as the fish are now leaving the lake margins and going into open water and that will make for some better early morning boat trolling.
Trolling small minnow lures off the lead core lines through the shallows at sunrise and sunset is producing the browns, rainbows and the odd Atlantic salmon.13 gram Tasmanian Devils are still going with possibly yellowing lures better now, with Y82 very popular. The best for me this week has been my own personalized black one side and orange the other yellowing Tasmanian Devil in the Duel Depth.
Jointed Rapalas, maybe with a touch of orange like the perch pattern, are well worth a try first up and when trolled in close to the shore and over weed beds there is a good chance of a big brown trout or Atlantic salmon. Also give some of the new blades a try, we have a good selection in our shop – most resemble the gold fish we have in our lake and the trout are hitting them hard.
The Y48 or Holographic duel depth is worth a try on dull days or deeper down.
You don’t have to fish these deep at the moment you just have to be in the right place at the right time
East Jindabyne islands, Hayshed Bay, Lion and Cub Islands and the South arm have been fishing very well.
Lake Bait Fishing  (Primarily most rivers and streams in the Snowy Mountains Region are fly and lure only, We recommend that you first check with the Department of Primary Industries (NSW Fishing rules) as to which rivers in the area you can legally bait fish in. IF IN DOUBT DON’T BAITFISH IN RIVERS!)

Fishing with Mudeyes has been a little slow last week, maybe due to the colder weather. Scrub worms off the bottom and a power bait dropper has been best over recent days and some big fish are being caught. Good reports on Bardi Grubs over the last few days as well and the bigger browns have been caught this way. The big secret at the moment is to fish with bail arm open and make sure you grease the line to make sure you keep it out of the slime on the bottom of the lake.
Best areas for bait fishing at the moment have been, The Haven, Curiosity Rocks Waste Point, The Snowy Arm and East Jindabyne pumping station.

Lake Spinning
With the water dropping and the fish moving away from the edges the spinning on the lake slowed a little and the best fishing has been in the deeper water.
Tasmanian Devils are catching fish in the deeper water by casting and waiting for the lure to sink a little before a slow retrieve. Cast as far out as you can but best results will be when the water is choppy with a little wind. Yellow wing Tassies are again doing best on the sunny days.
Anglers are still having good success using blades that resemble the goldfish we have in the lake.
Some of the better blades are TT Switchblade ‘Golden Boy’, Strike Pro Cyber Vibe 35 BLG and Cyber Vibe 50JU009.
Spin close around rocky outcrops for best results later on in the day in the day and use smaller lures like Celtas or Gillies Spinners or the Vibes around the shallow bays after dark. Don’t stay in one place too long and only put in a couple of casts in each area.

River SpinningThe rivers are now running a little slower and the water is clearer but we have experienced storms in the mountains this morning and more storms are predicted over the next two days so more water may change the way we fish. Fishing the faster runs has produced the best fish.
Floating minnows like Rapalas have still been best in the pools, where you can toss them in and let them sit a while before retrieving.
If you can get a lure closer to the bottom you will get more strikes.

Fly Fishing LakeMost fish this past week have been caught using Woolley Buggers or larger flies deep down if just prospect casting but if you do spot a fish it might be better to try a small nymph first. Strip the flies slowly after letting them sink to the bottom.
Craig’s Night time and Williamson’s Goldfish have been two flies well worth using at dawn and dusk.
If you sight a fish in the shallows you may be better to cast a smaller fly than a larger fly, something like a green nymph.

Fly Fishing RiversAs with my spinning report the amount of rain we get in the mountains over the next couple of days may change the current fishing conditions. We were hoping the warm weather predicted may pick up the dry fly fishing but with more water in the rivers most fish may still be caught on wet flies. The Mowambah still is a little slow. May take a couple more weeks yet before it fires up.

For visitors to the Snowy’s we have a full range of fishing tackle for hire at my shop and fishing tours are now available.
