Trout are back at Lake Wendouree

The trout fishery at Lake Wendouree is well on its way to a full recovery following years of drought. The lake was stocked in spring last year and received more trout over winter from Fisheries Victoria’s hatchery at Snobs Creek.

The 90,000 rainbow trout fingerlings released in November 2010 have grown very well and anglers are reporting these trout now measure 40cm plus, and are in great condition.

The rainbow trout were part of the rapid response to rebuilding drought affected fisheries using revenue from the sale of recreational fishing licences.

Fisheries Victoria has continued to rebuild Lake Wendouree in recent months releasing 10,000 larger ‘yearling’ brown trout. These are bigger than the fingerling size rainbows stocked last spring.

This year’s allocation of 10,000 rainbow trout, also yearlings, were stocked in August. The 20,000 trout put into Lake Wendouree this year will be a significant contribution to the fishery’s overall recovery and has been warmly welcomed by Ballarat anglers.
