« on: October 26, 2011, 03:45:06 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with Lake Mitchell about 2 hours drive NW of cairns. I am thinking. Of Putting the kayak on there and looking for some Toga. Any info suggesting whether or not it worth a shot would be much appreciated. Cheers. :thanks

G'Day Brett,

I've been there a couple of times for a look.

As you head north from Mareeba you will see a double wooden gate which you can go in (close it behind you) there is a locked gate further in but you can launch anywhere along there if you like. It's a bit tight to turn the car around but you'll manage.

Otherwise there's a couple of spots you can stop next to the highway & launch from there.

There's supposed to be very good sooty grunter & northern saratoga in there. When you see it you'll be blown away by the emergent weeds and grasses that make very good structure for fish.

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers,

fitz..

Cheers mate. Will probably have to wait a couple of weeks before I get a chance to go. Do you know if the fish in there are stocked or naturally occuring?

The Mitchell River is natural range of Sooty Grunter & Saratoga. I would think that they may have been in there when the river was illegally dammed.

Be sure to drop into the Mareeba Wetlands on your way past and you might see a few fish swimming around in the small pond at the info centre. Not much else to see there if you're not into shags or some bird that may or may not have migrated from Siberia.....a dust bowl track in there as well.
