Trout season opens in rivers this weekend

3 September 2013 - Victoria DEPI

The trout fishing season in rivers officially opens this weekend at midnight on Friday 6 September.

Fisheries Victoria Executive Director, Ross McGowan, said trout opening weekend was a significant date in the calendar of thousands of freshwater anglers.

"While many of the keenest trout anglers have braved the winter cold and satisfied their fishing urge in lakes, the opening of rivers to trout fishing represented a new opportunity to explore Victoria's great outdoors," Mr McGowan said.

"Thousands of anglers will travel to regional Victoria to cast a line for trout in rivers this weekend.

"They will contribute to local economies by staying in caravan parks, buying food and frequenting bait and tackle shops for last minute supplies.

"Recreational fishing is big business in Victoria and the opening of trout season is no exception.

"It is also a great weekend to spend time with family and friends by a river somewhere.

"To help celebrate trout opening, Fisheries Victoria and the Eildon community is again hosting the Goulburn Fishing Festival.

"On Friday 6 and Saturday 7 September, a variety of free events are planned focusing on freshwater fishing and making the most of Victoria's tremendous lakes and rivers.

"The Eildon Community Centre will be the hub of activity with fishing workshops, fly tying demonstrations, tackle displays and even fireworks over the Eildon Pondage.

"Saturday will be a hands-on day with a strong fish focus: trout stocking and fishing in the Eildon Pondage, fun activities for children and free tours of the department's fish hatchery at Snobs Creek."

As much as I b!tch about feral trout displacing native species, at least the Victorian Government sees the $ value in freshwater recreational angling.  If you sit in an SEQWater public consultation meeting and listen to what is being said, you'd think freshwater recreational anglers are the scourge of society, stealing stock, ruining property, lighting fires, shooting up the country and numerous other anti-social activities.  Thankyou Victorian Government for seeing the bigger picture.
