Ben Anderson Barrage water level lowered for repair works
02 Sep 2013 - SunWater

SunWater has commenced lowering the water storage level of Ben Anderson Barrage, as part of a program of works to repair damage sustained during the flood event in January 2013.

Initial underwater inspections of the Barrage confirmed that the upstream face of the concrete capping sustained scour damage. Lowering the water level will allow SunWater engineers to further assess the extent of the damage.

Tom Vanderbyl, General Manager Bulk Water and Irrigation Systems, said while the damage does not present an immediate safety hazard, it is SunWater’s priority to restore Ben Anderson Barrage to sound working order as quickly as possible and with minimal impacts to the local community.

"The water releases are expected to continue for around two weeks or until the Barrage ponded area is at a level that the damage can be effectively assessed and once inspections have been completed, repairs can then be planned and progressed," he said.

"It is important to be aware that it may be necessary to maintain the lowered water level for a number of weeks depending on the extent of the required repairs.

"We anticipate that repair works will commence on Tuesday, 3 September 2013 and at this stage expect they will continue until late September 2013, however, this may extend for some months subject to progress of the repair program.

"During the investigation and repair process, customers and the local community may experience difficulties accessing water and these works may also impact upon recreational activities in the area such as water skiing."

Mr Vanderbyl said that the safety of SunWater’s customers, staff and local residents remains the company’s first priority as the works are carried out.

SunWater will provide progress updates to customers and key stakeholders throughout the repair program.

If you have any concerns or comments regarding the impacts of this program of works, please call SunWater on 13 15 89.
