Sunfish bastardry.
« on: November 24, 2011, 06:10:37 AM »
Has anyone else seen the proposed simplified fishing regulations. Apparently they were sent to Quafca for comment.
Reducing size of both Marys and murrays to 55cm and removing Marys from the no take list in their natural habitat.
I am at GlenLyon at the moment and the electrofisher crew were here processing cod last night and they were finding murrays that were 65cm long and they were sexually immature.
Plus heaps of other criminal changes.
Will make the meatos happy but destroy what Deedi are supposed to protect.

 Cheers
 Ray
Update this proposal emanated from within sunfish not from deedi or fisheries.
Cheers
Ray

Looks like i dont have the computer skills to copy the docu if someone can send me their email adress i will forward it so that they can post it. rayke1938@yahoo.com.au

Ray it says:

3.Restricted areas, no take & noxious fish regulations to apply

so I assume that will apply to MRC from home range areas - i.e. they'll continue to be protected, 55cm does seem small for cod, and wonder why they've pulled barra back to 55? Doesm't make sense against their breeding biology? - Jim

Being a draft, released for comment and discussion, it could be well off what the committee actually want, but something sent out just to gauge opinion.

DEEDI have also found Murray Cod where you are that at 65cm long, 13 years old and finished their breeding capability.  It's difficult to have one law to cover a state the size of Queensland, but also impossible to have different laws to suit all the different areas and environments.  Take our discussions on stocked Bass compared to "wild" Bass, or consider the differences of stocked Barramundi in CQ lakes compared to natural Barramundi in the Gulf.

Sorry forgot to attach the email that it came from.
Here is copy of email received from Stocking Assn
 UNCLASSIFIED
Gentlepeople,

The attached email pertains to proposed simplified fishing regulations for Qld. Responses are urgently requested before Qld Fisheries commences passing them as law. I am personally alarmed because they seem to have omitted a number of key recreational fish from any bag or size limit and the rules will play into the hands of the "Fill the Freezer" rednecks.

Recommend you voice your concerns at the earliest. Please respond direct to Pam who is the secretary of QAFCA (her email address is in the attached.)

Cheers
Steve

Hi All,
Sunfish Qld needs your opinion. They have been asked by Fisheries Qld to
come up with a simplified list of fish sizes and bag limits, so that rec
anglers do not have to take an encyclopaedia on fishes or a computer with
them when they go fishing, to ensure that they do not accidentally break the
law and incur a fine.
They are asking you to comment on this revised list they have come up with,
ASAP, as it has to be presented to FQ within a fortnight.
Thank you for your cooperation with this.
Regards,
Pam

Re the size of cod in some of the border rivers the small cod size there appears to be the result of overstocking and this problem is being currently researched .
Jim I am uncertain of the wording at the end of the proposal. They state specifically that current apparatus regulations will still apply and then state a general wishy-washy statement re protected waters, not take zones which could mean anything. Why not state that all current no take species, zones etc to remain.
I really fear that they are opening the farm gate to allow widespread slaughter .
If you have a look at some of the changes to the rust water section such the reducing the size limit of jew down to 50cm and a bag limit of 20 as an example.
They even mention that some of the reduced size limits are below the sexual maturity size limits of certain species but go on to say that these species will be protected by the bag limits.
What a load of cods wallop.
 Cheers
Ray

I'm a little surprised that an official from a volunteer stocking group would use a term like "Fill the Freezer" rednecks to describe the people who pay the money to stock the dams.  I'm sure those people who do go fishing for a feed of fish, which they are completely entitled to do, would be impressed to know that the Stocking Group Heirarchy refer to them as "Fill the Freezer" rednecks.

 update
I have just been speaking to Martin Bellert from Sunfish and there is a mistake in the mackerell section.
The history of the proposal is that Sunfish have been for an extended time trying to get changes to the regulations and the so called simplified version is Fisheries response to Sunfish.
Would y0u all please as well as expressing your opinion here also respond on the email link provided in first post or even give David Bateman a ring on 38804261
 Cheers

Ray

I suggest you clarify where this emanated from whether it was Fisheries Queensland, DEEDI, MSQ, Sunfish or a Minister ????

You are willing not to stick the boot into Sunfish but very willing to kick 'someone' from Government

So, I'm guessing that's a Sunfish list and not a DEEDI list?
I must admit, I didn't get much past the "redneck" comment.
I hope Ray is along shortly with an appology to the DEEDI folks and an explanation to the rest of us about what is trying to be achieved here.

I am not suggesting anything, I don't need apologies........I am not sure where this has come from.....I would just like clarification.

And can I just clarify, discussions between Minister Wallace and Sunfish executive does not mean ~~~> DEEDI proposal

Ray, I would suggest that your post title "DEEDI Bastardry" should make you ring David Bateman, (I've tried and he's not answering) or QAFCA yourself.  Insinuations of DEEDI being Bastards is not something you'd want on your resume if it is not correct.  Normally, a DEEDI release would be on a DEEDI letterhead.
The email you've posted says "Sunfish Qld needs your opinion. They have been asked by Fisheries Qld to
come up with a simplified list of fish sizes and bag limits, so that rec

They are asking you to comment on this revised list they have come up with,
ASAP, as it has to be presented to FQ within a fortnight."

Now, can you please tell us who came up with the list?

I have finally been able to contact Jan the secretary of qafca who has informed me that the suggested list emanated from within sunfish and that the list has nothing to do with fisheries or deedi.
I am really appalled that something of this quality has emanated from a body that is supposed ton be looking after our interests.
Please send your comments tp Qafca.
 Cheers
Ray

Cmon Fishfolk you guys are here for kicking practice aren't you? Lol

Anything from sunfish relating to sweetwater I usually ignore, there aren't any tailor in the Condamine or Somerset etc... Said it several times, sunfish for rustwater, leave the fresh to those who have half a clue and actually care about sweetwater.

its actually the rustwater section that should really be up in arms apart from the both species of cod and ignoring  other long standing issues they havent done much to the sweetwater section.
