Title: Somerset Dam mystery fish??
Post by: usefulpup on October 28, 2012, 07:48:51 PM
Hi all,
I caught this fish on Friday in the timber at Somerset Dam. Does anyone know what kind of fish it is?
It was actually quite colorful (greenish and blue scales) and doesn't look like a grunter.
Thanks,
Andrew.

Looks like a Tilarpia mate, must be destroyed. It is illegal to take them or return them to the water.

Cheers Andrew

It's a Pearl Cichlid, cousin to Tilapia; both are introduced pest fish. Kill them & don't put any part back into the water. They're good eating (apparently)  :popcorn)

Can you tell us an approximate depth it was caught in?

Thankyou for the info,
It was caught on the bottom in about 4-6 metres of water.
