A weekend at Sundown
« on: May 20, 2014, 10:06:23 AM »
G'day all,  :camera

This will be my first fishing report ever so bare with me.  :thumb

A couple of months ago my mate (Daniel) and I (Luke) decided to venture down into Sundown National Park to try out some gorge country fishing, As nearly 10 years ago now I remember going to the main campground with Dad for a camping trip and seeing a bloke reel in a good 80cm  Greenie.

My mate and I decided to venture into the 4wd section only to do some exploring. That trip we took our kayaks and mainly just fished the main waterhole at Burrows. Which resulted in a 44cm greenback off the surface just on dark, and plenty of other surface strikes during the night.

Keen to get back down there, We organized another trip about a month ago to spend a Friday, Saturday and Sunday down there to walk the river bed and find some nice holes. This time our mate JB joined us, as he is just starting to get into fishing and is a keen camper/4wder, and wanted to give his new patrol a weekend away.

Ready to go:

Halfway in:

Camp:

Weekend was filled with a lot of walking, casting, laughs and amazing scenery, Cannot wait to get back down there and explore some more!

In the end we ended up with 12 cod for the weekend, ranging from 30-60cm. Nothing to big but great to see so healthy and everywhere. Also about another 12 dropped off surface.

Tally ended up with:
Daniel with 8 cod ( when we normally go to the condamine he catches none, so was a good change!) He also took the biggest for the weekend. 6 off a jackall surface and 2 off a gold bassman spinner.

Biggest of the trip:

Me with 3 cod, 1 off Taylormade Surface, 1 off 70mm Gidgee hardbody and 1 off 90mm AC invader, (fish are not scared to hit something nearly half there size.) Excuse my man handle grip, (must be the beard :P)

Jb with 1 and broke his codginity with a little 30ishcm off the surface on a taylormade in about 10cm of water. Unfournteatly JB didn't get a photo with his, but next time, but this is what JB done a lot of this trip, don't know how as it was freezing!

JB swimming to get my AC invader (bought him subway for it :P)

Having a bath:

Video of the biggest one of the weekend off the Surface (excuse the editing, still learning)

Oh and what's a camping report without a photo of the T.V ;)

I think that is about it, Ended up being the best fishing trip I've had yet and it has made me that much more motivated to get fully set up for camping trips :)

End to the weekend:

Hope you enjoy the read :)

Luke

P.S can somebody tell me how to embed youtube vidoes? I can't do it the normal way i do it :(

Good first effort with a trip report.  :youbeauty

To embed YouTube vids, cut n paste all of the webpage address bollocks from the task bar at the top of screen but remove the "s" from the end of the https part of it. The forum software will do the rest. The short cut URL that YouTube gives you will not work. I find it still doesn't appear embedded if reading the forum from an iPad but is fine when viewing from the laptop.

Cheers,
Dave.

Thanks Dave! All sorted now

Muzfox, don't overlook pools either that you wouldn't normally fish because you think they are to small/shallow. There was one pool that would of only been 1.5 metres deep at its smallest point by about 20 metres long, 5 metres across. Ended up gettin my 2 cod off hardbodies in there, once off surface and one off a spinner. 4 different cod out of a tiny pool.

When we first saw it i was doubting it hard. Then I caught the first fish, surprised me so much!

Looks like great country... I've never fished Sundown; I want to now. May try the fly rod with some cod gurglers on top. I suppose the fishing will have shut down with the cold & I'll need to wait until spring.

Isn't cold yet, and I don't know how affected they will be. The water isn't very deep in most parts by the looks of it and should get some warmth during the day. I'll be out there in 3 weekends, will be trying for some on Fly. Tying up some gurglers and wiggle minnows for the trip, won't be huge suckers as I'm braving this using a 6wt rod, don't have anything bigger lol. Will take the baitcaster as backup if I fail with the fly :)

Great spot and some top pics. Didn't seem like that cod on the video suffered at all from the experience. Took off like a rocket. Great report. Thanks for sharing.
