Lake Gowrie

(1/1)

aussiebasser:
Ok, so you've never heard of it, but, Lake Gowrie is situated half way between Inverell and Copeton Dam.  It is approximately 70 acres in size, with plenty of natural structure.  Privately owned by Nick Rhoades, who lives on the property, I've had the privilege of fishing it twice.  The first time was a bit over four years ago when Harro and I visited for a day while fishing Copeton Dam and dropped the Stratos in.  Last weekend Pam and I had a quick trip down with a couple of kayaks for another try.  The lake has been stocked with Murray Cod, Silver Perch and Trout.  It is home to the legendary Frank, the biggest fish in there.  Having been caught three times over the last few years, Frank is said to be over a metre long, and has always been caught in the same spot.  Spinnerbaits, Surface Lures, Lipless Cranks and Fly have all been successful.  This trip, we dropped a few fish, and only managed to land one feisty 60cm example.  I prefer to concentrate on a tree line which runs along a drop-off into the creek bed.  At about 3 metres water depth, these trees are easy to target with a Spinnerbait.  I highly recommend a visit to Lake Gowrie, which is now open to the public for a small fee.  Depending on your preference, accommodation can be either a cabin at Copeton Waters Park, which is what we did, or you can upscale a bit and stay at a Motel in Inverell.  Both or these options are about 20km from the lake.  If you desire, you could set up a tent or camper at the lake itself.  This would be a great option if you wanted to try some night fishing on a still night.  We were plagued with easterly winds for this trip, which does shut the fish down to some degree.  It’d be a great destination for a Kayak club trip.
Lake Gowrie could be the best spot to target an XOS Silver Perch.  The one I saw this trip would have been close to 60cm, and they have been caught there over the old 10 pound mark.

Nick can be contacted at: nickrhoades@bigpond.com  Nick is himself a very knowledgeable angler and his tips are well worth following.

Top pic is the fish from this weekend.  The bottom pic is a better fish I got a few years ago in the same lake.

I've had the privelege of fishing Lake Gowrie in the past for Murray Cod & XOS Silver Perch.

Had one session there, with Nick guiding & I had a strike first cast, five surface boofs later I got him. 5 minutes later Nick put me onto another...think he's named every cod in the place.

Fitz..
