Lake Baroon remains closed to all water-based activities Date: 07/11/2014 - Seqwater
As at Friday 7 November 2014, Lake Baroon remains closed to all water based activity due to ongoing water quality issues (cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae). Download the blue-green algae fact sheet for more information.
We are conducting visual inspections of the lake twice a week and obtaining water quality samples weekly. Based on the on-going water quality monitoring, it is not appropriate to re-open the lake to any water based recreation activity at this time.
Signage has been erected on-site advising of the temporary closure. We trust that all visitors will comply with directions regarding the temporary closure.
Cyanobacteria are natural organisms, and their presence in water-bodies is a natural result of the surrounding environment. Seqwater is working with catchment care groups to improve the condition of the catchment land around our lakes, however that is a long-term solution, rather than a quick fix to the immediate issue. Water quality is being closely monitored and the lake will be re-opened as soon as it is appropriate to do so.
Please note there are no increased risks to users of the land-based recreational areas. Due to treatment process, this blue-green algal bloom in the raw water does not pose significant risks to drinking water supply. Sorry, only registered users can see this content. Please Login or Register.
