NEWS
The first half of August is considered to be the peak snow season for the mountains and this is the time the roads are very busy (lots of police about) and there is limited accommodation available.
Stick to the speed limits, don’t drink and drive and if you want accommodation there is a better and cheaper chance in Berridale and Cooma. By September Jindabyne will be back to nearly normal and spring fishing is just the best so book your accommodation now and get down to the mountains for a spring fish!
Over the last week we have experienced fine sunny days warm days up to an incredible 20 degrees, perfect for fishing, (not for snow) but yesterday the cold returned and the next week we can expect cool to cold nights and a few snow showers in the mountains.
Last week the bait fishing was fantastic and spinning with lures very good early and late in the day.
Trolling was steady if you put the time in and the very few fly anglers about all managed to at least get a fish.
With a little rain over the weekend and the lake level on the rise again, it should be a good week ahead.
PLEASE NOTE. This will be the last report until September, whilst I attend a couple of meetings and head to the Gold Coast for a look at all the new fishing products at the Australian Fishing Trades Show, so expect a few exciting new product reports early next month.
Let’s have a look at some of the better ways to catch a fish this month-
Rivers are now closed to fishing until the October long weekend.

LAKE LEVEL and TEMPERATUREThe lake level is at 80% and rising. With the rain and warm temperatures in the mountains last week the snow melt a little and the lake is rising faster than Snowy Hydro are pumping at the moment.
The water temperature today was 7 degrees.

Best methods to catch a trout.
Best method – Bank based lure spinning or bait on the lake.
Best lake trolling lure – Number 48 Tasmanian Devil and perch Raplas are now doing well.
Best lake area – Creel Bay and Waste Point area and Stinky Bay (The Haven).
Best fly method lake – Black weighted Woolly Bugger and Williamson’s Goldfish.
Best River Fly Fishing–  All Rivers Closed To Fishing
Best River Lures – All Rivers closed to fishing until October
Best lake spinning lures. – Strike Pro Cyber Vibes, Rainbow trout Rapala and 7 gram pink Tassies.


Let’s have a look at what the fishing is going to be like over the next few weeks.

Trolling.As you would expect for this time of year the weather determines where and how we fish.
August can still be unpredictable as the cold fronts move through the mountains and the lake can also be very dangerous so check the weather predictions before heading out on the lake.
With the trout around the edges of the lake, surface trolling lures at 2 metres deep and lead core lines will be the best methods to get a trout at the moment.
It is also definitely worth trolling some minnow lures early in the morning off the lead core lines.  RMG Scorpions, Stumpjumpers, Tassie Terrors and Rapalas are a few of lures that I have had success on last week.
Surface troll in the shallows early with dark Tasmanian Devil lures.
Best colour is the Holographic or the Brown Bomber number 48 Tasmanian Devil.
The best lures when the weather is overcast have been pinks and oranges or lures with a little pink or orange.

Lake Bait Fishing 
(Primarily most rivers and streams in the Snowy Mountains Region are fly and lure only, We recommend that you first check with the Department of Industry and Investment NSW (NSW Fishing rules) as to which rivers in the area you can legally bait fish in. IF IN DOUBT DON’T BAITFISH IN RIVERS!)
Winter when the water is cold is the best time to try some shore based bait fishing and over the last week the fishing has been good, with worms and powerbait the best.
Tiger worms or scrub worms under a float have been doing very well also for rainbows and Atlantic salmon.
The Berkley’s Powerbait and Gulp Bait are still worth having in the water as some days it can be the only thing that works. Try teaming up the powerbait along with worms.
Put two hooks on the line and combine a worm and a powerbait to double your chances of a trout.
If you want a big brown trout then try bardi grubs which we have in stock at my shop.
Best areas for bait fishing at the moment have been, Waste Point area, The Claypits, Hatchery Bay, Town Centre in front of Banjo Patterson Park and The Snowy Arm.

Lake Spinning Lure spinning has been good and should continue that way for a while yet. There are trout about and the best fishing is in the shallows early and deep water later in the middle of the day. The Tasmanian Devil 48 Brown Bomber good and so is the Holographic and keep a number 72 Pink Panther in your tackle box as well.
Minnow lures like floating Rapalas, Stumpjumpers and other minnow style lure in either natural rainbow trout and brown trout patterns or gold colours to represent the Jindabyne goldfish that the trout love to chase and eat.
Blades like the Strike Pro Cyber Vibe 35and the TT Swithblade 1/8 sunset gold (any gold) are also very good at the moment.
Don’t stay in one place too long and only put in a couple of casts in each area.
Rivers Closed to Fishing Until October.
Fisheries Inspectors do patrol in winter so make certain you have your NSW Fishing Licence on you when fishing.

Fly Fishing LakeThe fly fishing on the lake is still OK but will improve this month as the lake very slowly starts to rise and temperatures slowly increase. Fishing the small bays and inlets will get some results very early and late in the day if you’re careful not to spook the trout. Woolley Buggers, Craig’s Night time and Williamson’s Goldfish have been the flies well worth using at dawn and dusk. The shallow bays on the lake are worth a try early before the sun rises but after that you had better be fishing deep.
