Post by: scottmcmahon on November 12, 2014, 09:15:11 PM
gday members,

first post on this forum so here goes!
i have just moved to airlie beach from melbourne, so the fishing is very different up here. i held my owne in victoria and got good results over the years. i am struggling a bit up here thou, mostly with finding decent areas to troll deep diving for lures mackerel/tuna/gt's and anything else that pulls hard!

i have a 5.1 metre plate boat so on a good day i have access to all islands and inner reefs. all help would be much appreciated.

happy fishing people  :thanks

Gidday Scott, when I fished out of Shute harbour we just targeted steep drop offs (that we assumed were broken rock/reef) around islands with 5-7" shads and pre rigged soft pastics. I landed a couple of lutjanus spp. and that was it, the rest pulled a bit too hard   :-[

Other than that we just chased tuna on the surface.

Mick

Mate get onto Richard from Barra 2 Billfish Charters, 0437 598 788, he is a top bloke who really knows his stuff. A day spent with him will have you sorted in no time.

Cheers Andrew

Scottmcmahon,         Moving to any new area can be a slowdown from your usual known fishing spots and habits especially when your move is interstate, sometimes thousands of miles from what your used to, Principles of fishing tactics remain somewhat the same but tides and species differ and its easy to get yourself into a whole lot of (up …. Creek without a paddle), I know what you’re facing because I shifted to Qld from Victoria 14 years ago and although water is water, up here they have things like Crocks & Ciguatera to look out for, all this will come to you with experience and advice, I’ve found that you don’t have to pay charter fishing company’s just to get common starters advice, in fact forums like this one and others (rust waters) or most importantly your local fishing & tackle store will be more than willing to advise you where and how to fish in your area, (it’s in their best interest) My 2 bobs worth of advice though is to join a local fishing club and most definitely pay for your membership with the local Volunteer Marine Rescue, so good luck watch the winds & low tides.
Kind regards,
