New Rosco 'Scamper' canoe
« on: July 02, 2013, 12:24:49 PM »
I have been looking around for a couple of months for a fishing canoe and had decided on a Pack Angler, but I now see that Rosco have brought out their lightweight fibreglass canoe called the "Scamper"

Specs: Length: 4.02m Weight: 20 kg Width: 88cm Material: Fibreglass

At about half the price of the PA it is definitely a contender.

What are your thoughts?

Not sure about half the price...I saw the PA for sale at the boat show for just over 14 hundred, maybe it was a special don't recall. PA is is 40% lighter, and is made from royalex which will flex when you hit anything underwater, while f/glass likes to crack. PA comes with an anchor and trolley and a rod holder, what does the scamper come with ??

The best test would be to paddle them both for an hour each on the same day and when finished pick up each of them and put them on your shoulder and walk 25ft and lift them on top of a 4wd you will soon work out which one you would rather have.

Cheers

Mac they are having a launch for the new scamper this Saturday but I am working all day. I might go over on Sunday and try and compare both in the flesh side by side.

I thought fibreglass would be better as it can be repaired better where royalex gets a patch over the top. I'm still learning about all this stuff.

Fibreglass breaks waaaaayyyy faster and easier than royalex and plastic. You've really got to treat it nice, no rocks and you've got to carry as opposed to drag through log jams, rock bars etc that you can with royalex and plastic, that isn't so easy with all your gear in. I had a glass canoe & had to get it repaired after every trip down the river. One submerged rock or log and CRRRAAACCCKKK another leak. Finally I gave up & got a plastic one and have never had a leak since. Better looking seat in the pack angler by the look, that'd better for the back. Maybe the dealer can get you in the standard Pack canoe that doesn't have all the extra goodies on it and only a bench seat. photos down below

Crackers I had a look at both on the weekend. The fibreglass canoe looks good and is just as light as the royalex but I could push the side wall in under the gunnel with my thumb and quite a bit of flex, I guess that is how it became so light. Really torn between the two at the moment. If the fibreglass was more durable I would grab it hands down as there is talk of a square backed transom and an optional second seat for a passenger. While I do look after my gear it is always the submerged rock/log that you never intend on hitting which does the damage.

Has anyone ever stood up and fished from a PA?

When I was testing various yaks I tested quite a few of the hobies. Standing up in a PA is dead easy, very simple to do. In the end however, the extra cost and weight were too much for me and I went the outback. Not planning on standing up in it (i'd make a very big splash lol) but I tell you what, haven't had the need to stand up yet, sitting is much more comfortable, and fly casting is just as easy, just like wading chest deep :) Benefit of any yak is I don't have to cast long distance, I can just get closer.

I'd give 2 thumbs up for plastic tho, just so low maintenance, dead easy to modify etc etc.

I saw a bloke with a Pack Angler on the mid Brisbane River at Lowood one day. He had a Minn Kota bow mounted on it and was standing up casting.

I've stood up in pack angler several times, its pretty easy, but hardly needed as its a good seating arrangement.
