Long Plain Hut vandalised

The historic Long Plain Hut, a popular destination for anglers in the northern end of Kosciuszko National Park was vandalised in March, with over $10,000 of damage. Mathews Hut was also damaged.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service staff reported that an entire wall was ripped off Long Plain Hut, windows were smashed, signs were damaged and bottles were smashed. Trees were cut down and nearby creek beds were damaged by vehicles.
The NPWS and police are looking for four men, aged between 20 and 25, who were seen camping at Long Plain with a crew cab ute with aluminium sides, carrying a large gas barbecue, blue-green motorbike and ride-on lawnmower on the back.

The group also allegedly harassed other campers in the area.

Long Plain hut had been extensively restored over many years by volunteer historical and conservation groups.

NP&WS have posted pics of some of the damage on Flickr, see

Mongrels.  Let's just hope that they are stuck overnight sometime with only a vandalised hut to stay in!
