Help Needed - LAFMA

From Lloyd Willmann - Logan & Albert Fish Management Association

Friends & family .. fishers & non fishers,

Most of you are probably aware that I have been pretty heavily involved with the fishery in the Logan & Albert Rivers for quite a long time through a group called Carpbusters (now called Logan & Albert Fish Management Assoc - LAFMA). We have been trying to eradicate the noxious Carp from the freshwater reaches and replace them with the Australian Bass and Mary River cod. This has been going on since 1998 and I believe we have created one of the better Bass fisheries in SE Qld..
A couple of years ago the State Government completed Wyaralong Dam on Teviot Brook, a tributary of the Logan River, about 12 km out of Beaudesert on the Boonah Road. Recreational fishers were calling out for someone to create a recreational fishery in the dam so LAFMA put up their hands. We decided to create a Mary River cod fishery with a back up bass fishery. The only problem being that all fingerlings had to be purchased with funds raised by us ... no financial support from the Government (any funding that was available from the Government was slashed to zero when the LNP came to power).

A couple of weeks ago we managed to get 4800 cod fingerlings at approx $2 per fingerling (the first Mary River cod fingerlings available for 6 years ... but that's another story that I won't go into here) ... as you can see, not an easy exercise when we had to sell 2400 sausages at Bunnings to make that initial stocking of cod at Wyaralong.

Now to my question of help ... in the email to me below from Fisheries is a link that will take you to Qld Government web site and Proposed Changes to the Qld Impoundment Permit Scheme. If you quickly read the Regulatory Impact Statement then go to the * Provide your feedback .. and complete a quick survey.
All I ask is that you consider going for Option 1(a) and in favour of Option 2 .... this will allow Wyaralong to go onto the SIP Scheme and therefore give us access to some annual funding to buy bass and cod fingerlings for the Dam ... going in favour of Option (2) will require all persons over the age of 18 who fish one of the listed storages to buy a permit .. thus putting more money in the bucket.

For all of you who are involved in any organisation, you will be aware that it is always the same few who do all the work, but everyone wants to take advantage of the final product .. so please help us dedicated few who are creating this fishery by getting us onto the SIP Scheme
I will leave the other general questions in the survey for you to ponder and make up your own mind (I might add however .. I would not like to see any commercial fishery in freshwater)

Feel free to give me a call if needed.

cheers,
Lloyd

Actually any group that is currently stocking waters that are not part of the current sip scheme needs help.
 Cheers
Ray

Dale are you just against the inclusion of just Wyaralong in the scheme or are you against the inclusion of all new stocking groups.
Are you aware of any proposals that the LAFMA have in before daff?
Are you aware of the policy of all the proposed stocking groups.
Would you vote for the inclusion of all the other groups with the exception of wyaralong?

Response from fisheries.

"
When the fishery is established and if they are placed on the SIP Scheme, we will amend the Regulations to allow them to be taken outside the closed season."

This reinforces previous verbal communication between the stocking group and fisheries but now it is in writing.

Catch 22 if people vote against Wyaralong becoming part of the sip scheme it would appear that MRC will never be a permitted fish in the dam.
Cheers
Ray

I hardly think the RIS response is a voting card.

Who would vote against Wyralong going on the SIP, certainly not me. I would only ever support a consistent selection criteria with the usual accountability in place, so if that means Awoonga (for sample) gets added even tho theres no commaunity based stocking group, so be it.

Back to Wyaralong, I'd think that not having a closed season on MRCs in the place but still stocking would be counter productive. I'd want them left along while spawning. But that's up to the management committee.

" we will amend the Regulations to allow them to be taken outside the closed season."
Does this not state that there will be a closed season in line with all other dams that are stocked with MRC?
By the way these words are from Tony Ham and not a figment of my imagination.
 Cheers
Ray

Hi Ray.
Actually I read that it says the opposite. That's why I asked....

Anyone else read it that way or have I finally lost the plot all together??

There is a brochure promoting a Mary River Cod fishery?

Protected/No Take in Logan catchment, everywhere except in and upstream of the 9 listed impoundments. No reason not to add Wyaralong and upstream with the closed season to the list.

Bloke down at Wyaralong showed me one in May or June.  I'm sure it had LAFMA on it, about A6 size.
