Title: biggest bass in the world (australia)
Post by: childersfish on June 20, 2011, 09:01:02 AM
A friend of mine has just had his son move in with him up here near Childers. I took him to the shop to buy some fishing equipment. All his had been stolen from his van in Bundy. We got talking and I showed him one of the holes where we pick up Bass, Silvers ect that escape the local dams in flood conditions. Anyway he said to me..I hold the record for the biggest Bass caught in Wivenhoe Dam. That's a big claim, so I said how big did it go. He said it went 73cms, didn't fight real hard and surfaced easily. He took a pic and released it. So you know what I'm doing..yep trying to get hold of that pic.
He's in a pickle having just moved, but hopefully it wont be long before it surfaces. Seems like a nice fella, though I don't know him, but his ol man does alright fishing. It all sounds real and I've got no reason to doubt him. I hope he comes up with the pic so I can post it on here. It'll definately take pride of place in the shop.
Anyone know of a similar capture that they can confirm is true? Is this the biggest or has someone got a bigger one.. ;)

I have never seen a photo confirming a Bass of more than 60cm.  In fact I've made an offer of a $100 Sweetwater store voucher to anyone who can produce a photo of a Bass on a measuring tape that is over 60cm.  They do exist.  DEEDI elecrofished a wild fish of 83cm.  That, and a 73 would both be freaks though.

Ah..glad you brought that up as this guy said he had the pic taken with the fish on a tape to show it's size. I'll ring him to see how the fishing gear went and see if that pic has turned up

Sorry Binder, your dress making tape doesn't constitute a measuring device for fishing puposes.  I'm guessing that one was about 30.  Better luck next time.
(Just think, if you do get one now, nobody, especially me, is ever going to believe you.)

I wouldn't believe me if I got a 60cm either.
If I do, I'll keep it in the pond next to the unicorn pen!   ;)

Its not Buffalo grass Steve, its Aloe Vera bushes, the massive bass just dwarfs them a bit ;)

Well it's looking good. had the bloke in the shop today about the big bass said he's getting the pic no worries. at the time he was talking to me, an older fella listening in said he caught a bass of 75cm in monduran! He said he trolled it up and it fought well. He said the only place to chase bass and big uns in mondy (local name lake dissapointment) is arm B.
Meanwhile back at the picture.. i can confirm the fish picture was taken on a tape, apparently with some cans of some type to show how big..big..big it really is.. the wait is killing me.
I told him about the site and the $100..he smiled..a big broad crockadile smile..and said..no worries mate you'll see it soon..ooohh  show me the money..er I mean pic

Obviously you fella's didn't read the QT on Saturday. In the Charltons write up for the week was a picture of a 60cm Bass caught at Karalee on lures.

Caught by a young lass too, a change to Steven M or Novice holding up another bass

Not really, nobody really knows how long it takes a bass to reach it's maximum size.  I was 6'2" when I was 16 years old.  I'm still 6'2" tall.  Did it take me 16 years or 53 years to reach 6'2" tall?  I say it's the same with fish, unless you can name one other creature that continues growing until it dies.

That's a nice bass to be sure, but I wouldn't be calling that a true 60cm bass compared to how the majority are measured ie. intact & on the measuring tape. I recon apples with apples is probably a nice 55er.

A damn nice fish for sure, but no cigar on the 60cm barrier IMHO.

Thanks for posting. :youbeauty

Cheers,

Indeterminate growth refers to the condition where animals grow rapidly when young, and continue to grow after reaching adulthood although at a slower pace.  It is common in reptiles, most fish, and many mollusks.

You blokes have got to be kidding, of course the big ones are out there, still to be caught.

They are big because they are smart and will always be the hardest to hook up.

Always go prepared for the big one each time you go out.

I never fish light, my leaders are always ready to handle a monster. Twice the size of the last one I have pulled in.

Wouldn't you feel good if he snapped off at the side of the boat or as soon as he touched the rocks.

Dale,

Carpet Pythons , they get to 6ft in 3-4 years on good tucker in the wild. Then they keep growing but at a slower rate until something kills them , eg. people , cars  , dogs , shotguns etc........ . Very rare for them to be found over 3 metres anymore.

Cheers,
Dave.

I would call it for about 54 / 55

Tail is stroked, its short of the start and its throat is cut. That is a rat.

Now Dale when did you start loosing your hair, recon you may have been 6'4" as a young fella with a mullet'

Yeah, me too. Couple of weeks ago I fished a little lake in the Uk with 4lb mono with 2lb hook length, size 16 barbless hook. Handled the 18 1/2 LB carp easily. ;D
If I had killed it I would have been lynched.
And I have it on good authority that when Dale did have hair it was styled pretty much like Gary Glitters. ;) so six foot six is possible.

I used to fish comps in the canals in the UK. I used to fish with a pole it was thirty odd foot long. My main line was 1lb and the bottom (that's leader to us) was 10oz with a size 24 hook. we'd use micro lead and very small floats about 40mm long. I'd land 10lb bream on it..took a while. Mainly though you'd be targetting small fish like roach small carp (crusian). Was the weather cold and were you using pinkies (tiny maggots). Some of the old boys back then would pop the maggots under their tongue to warm them so they'd wriggle better. I wouldn't be able to see that rig today let alone tie it..lol. haven't got the pic yet..wots he doing?

You have to fart in a kayak at least once, and make it a decent one.  It amplifies the sound dramatically and just about sends shock waves down the water column spooking the fish, off into the scrub making any small animal hoof it, and high up into the ether scaring the galahs out of the trees.

Sorry Dick not a lot to report. Just went fishing with some borrowed gear. While all the locals were at work. Wasn't expecting to catch a great deal other than carp and hopefully a few silver fish, and I know how all you guys just love photos of carp. It was bloody cold, about ten degrees. Fished with a 13 foot rod (you kinda need to use these with such light gear) at about six foot deep under a waggler float using a single piece of sweetcorn for bait. I was pleased with the catch  because of fact that I was on the bank with serious trees and bushes around and well out into the water leaving about a ten foot wide gap that became about four foot close to the bank, to guide the fish through. Caught probably a dozen or so assorted fish up to around three pound the same session. Best part was a local fishing nearby had three poles ( poles are a European thing which would make you sad if you saw people fishing with them) he caught bugger all in four hours. The camera was in Egypt at the time with the wife who was looking at pyramids and stuff. Hell I'd even take carp anyday rather than all that sand and busted tombs.
Does that make me a Philistine G  ::)
Cheers John.

Methinks this thread has degenerated into talk of Carp and Farts. Perhaps the two are interrelated somehow. As one who appreciates a really good passing of gas I can only surmise what the sound effects would be on a wet kayak seat after a good feed of refried beans. Perhaps that might be a way of calling carp?? However it's highly unlikely that a 60cm Bass would respond.

This begs the question can you tune pitch of the thing to attract fish and who's got it sussed?  I mean low and slow or short and fast, how do you spray them?

I don't really think so Dick, the first time you let one fly while sitting on a wet kayak seat it really surprises you. The magnitude and raw power of the " Yakflat " as I like to call it is something to behold. It's wild and aggressive. If only I could somehow learn to produce the same effect in everyday life I would be held in very high esteem amongst my peers.

Now, where's this bass pic at ?

Best part was a local fishing nearby had three poles ( poles are a European thing which would make you sad if you saw people fishing with them) he caught bugger all in four hours. The camera was in Egypt at the time with the wife who was looking at pyramids and stuff. Hell I'd even take carp any day rather than all that sand and busted tombs.
Does that make me a Philistine G  ::)
Cheers John.

Yeah know the carp thing John, got over that deriding Mugs about his feral fishing habits a while back ;D.  However when I looked past the fish to technical world of pommy sweetwater fishing was quite intriguing, hence the ask.

Trying to get Mugs to put a carp report in, it'll get a few upturned noses but there will be a few that'll be all over it so see how its done :thumbsup

Dick I think the important thing when trying to call fish flatulently is to always ensure that a follow on is not part of the event. Although that said a berley trail could have side benefits.

I am going to a party on the weekend. Guess who will be there..yep. the record holder for the biggest Bass. I will be giving him a bit of a going over about this elusive picture. Spoke to another guy today who says 68cm bass are fairly common in wivenhoe dam? He's a got a picture too! problem is it has the fish hanging across a poly'foam veggie box..so no proof..again.
Andrew dropped into the store today with the young fella. Good to meet another from sweetwater fishing. Thanks Guys  :youbeauty

I've been fishing Wivenhoe since 1986, and your mate is right.  Those bloody 68cm Bass get freakin' annoying.  I get sick of letting the bastards go.  Mongrel things, hopefully the floods thinned them out a bit.  I know Sel and Steve have been getting stuck into fish that size in the River.

Nice try Ray, but no cigar.  Remind him that if the brag mat had shrunk the fish would show bigger than it is, not smaller, and I haven't heard of a brag mat stretching too far.  That is a nice fish, well over 50 and one to be proud of.  I have to wonder what would make someone lie to his mates to tell them it was 62cm.  You know 99% of fishermen give the rest of us a bad name.

Yeah imagine they would be very slow growing once they get to a reasonable size. She was a bycatch, night fishing for jew, took a 5 inch hollowbelly, a mate got one the same size the night b4 on a 5 inch gulp. Bless her cotton socks, i will thanks her each Bass I catch next season.

54cm was caught recently at NPD along with over 30 smaller ones on the day, no lies told this was meant as a joke. NPD has been excellent one day and ratshit the next. Got 22yellas one day, 48 bass another, its good to see there are still some left in the dam.

They are nice fish Ray, but you need to look closer at the photographs.  The 60cm fish has one side of its tail touching 60 and one side touching 55 and it's mouth is not touching the zero end.  It ain't 60 but it's a top fish.  Mick's shot of his 62 is not much better on a crinkled up brag mat, again a very nice fish and probably as close to 60 as I've seen.  I don't know Mick, but he says he has caught a lot of fish a lot bigger than that, I'd love to see some of those pics.

So Alison's yella could have gone 62cm then?  The roll up mats if not out dead flat can make the fish length appear smaller.

BTW- you need to subtract the width of the end section of the orange plastic ruler to get it back to a level playing field which makes it closer to the metal ones.

At the end of the day, only a fisheries certified measuring device means diddly to a judge. Yes they do have them inspected & certified as accurate to Australian Standards.

They are a mythical beast that doesn't exist.  I've seen plenty of fudged pics, and now I've even seen someone try to pass off a Mulloway with a rounded tail, as a Bass with a forked tail, but I have never seen a photo of a 60 and I'm starting to think I never will.  Childerfish's customer is obviously another liar.

Lol that one was funny, although I was prepared to give the guy the benefit of the doubt that maybe they just didn't know.  I have seen pics of a guy in Hong Kong who was catching Sea Bass (as they call them) and it looked a lot like a Jewie. Bass = Jewie.....  a stretch but there you go.

I find it amusing when those having a vested interest in a business around a location are in talking up "their location" in fishing fishing reports... if you read the newspapers you see lots of it. You don't seem to read anything like "no fish here, don't come"

There are some nice bass in Monduran of that there's no doubt. It was a great bass fishery long before the barra took off. While doing months at Maritime College in Bundaberg we were out there after "school" knocked off at 3:00pm every day.

Anyhow, no picture = no cigar.  Just another "fishing yarn".......... And what a tale....a whopping 65er.  The way it's been fishing for barra lately I'm told, you'd be happy to get a barra that big, let alone a bass.
