Invasive vine targetted on Stanley River

Seqwater partners with Moreton Bay Regional Council to eradicate invasive vine
25 November 2014     - Seqwater

Seqwater’s cats claw control project on the Stanley River in Neurum has received a funding contribution from Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Seqwater has undertaken vital works over the past two years to target the cats claw, an invasive vine which poses a threat to riparian vegetation along the banks of the river.

Seqwater Chief Executive Officer Peter Dennis said Seqwater had invested $200,000 in the project to date, with a further $300,000 committed over the coming three financial years.

Mr Dennis said the $100,000 contribution by Moreton Bay Regional Council would enable Seqwater to expand its work along the Stanley River to prevent erosion.

“The cats claw vine smothers mature trees which grow alongside the river. It can become so dense and heavy that the trees collapse,” Mr Dennis said.

“As the roots of native vegetation are what holds the riverbank together, the death of this vegetation can result in erosion.

“It is therefore critical we undertake this work to minimise riverbank deterioration which contaminates the water, resulting in higher water treatment costs.”

Mr Dennis said local property owners had greatly assisted Seqwater in eradication of the cats claw vine.

“Quite often we require access to local landholders’ land in order to treat the weed,” he said.

“Some residents have also contributed to weed control by assisting with post treatment maintenance.

“The project will ultimately be more effective through multiple partnerships so I thank residents for their contributions, along with the Moreton Bay Regional Council for their funding.”

Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Division Twelve Councillor Adrian Raedel said the Moreton Bay Region’s $100,000 partnership with Seqwater would build on council’s strong commitment to the preservation and rehabilitation of local riparian environments.

“Improving and maintaining the health and water quality of our rivers and waterways is important not only to the sustainability of the Moreton Bay Region for future generations but also that of our neighbours,” Cr Raedel said.

“The invasive nature of cats claw demands a coordinated approach to eradication on the Stanley River that involves private landholders and government agencies.

“It’s a good example of what can be achieved by working together to improve water quality, restore ecosystems and reduce the potential for cats claw vines to spread to other catchments.”
