Now with the river level finally back to normal this morning, this afternoon I dropped my kayak in for a fish at the infamous Harpeng road in Wivenhoe Pocket. Both adjoining landholders were out and about on their quad bikes, with only the the upstream landholder coming over for a chat while I negotiated my way through the gate and the long grass. This gentleman was nothing but nice and a pleasure to talk to. The downtream landholder kept his distance but kept a watchful eye on me for the first half hour or so while I fished in his vicinity.
I launched quite late (nearly 5pm) and only had an hour or so worth of light to flick the lures. Ended up with 2 Bass, a Forky and some unstoppable that robbed me of my spinnerbait. Here's a few pics.
I didn't take a pic from the gate today, but here's what it looked like last week.

I just dragged the yak straight down through the grass and through the castor oil trees.

After the release from Wivy, the bank has a half inch layer of silt over it, just a tad slippery.

The fence on the downstream side, near the pump.

A view of the bank( heaps easier than Heart Attack Hill)

So, after a hiatus in availability, Harpeng Road is open for business. Don't forget to lodge your objection to the Temporary Road closure.
Cheers,
Dave.

Thanks Dave,
I've heard that there is still an ungated fence that needs to be negotiated to access the water. Council has promised me that the area is freely accessible through a gate now.
-
Dale,
You can go straight down the bank through the trees to a shallow but at the moment a little muddy easy launch. The old shingle crossing is still fenced off in front of the pump. As it stands, you won't get a 4wd down to the river's edge without the removal of that bottom fence.
Cheers,
Dave.

totally unacceptable. The offender has put a gate on the 2nd fence that was erected "after" the council began action.
A gate that opens up to yet another fence is pointless as I see it. The persons involved appear to be laughing at the council, and now council have been made aware they've been played for fools, AND complaint has been made to DERM for illegal occupation of crown land.

So best to bring a pair of pliers to launch the Poly ? :Hunting)

So best to bring a pair of pliers to launch the Poly ? :Hunting)
Kayak & Canoe is now easy with gate on first fence. To go further down the road reserve to the island, you need to take pliers or climb thru the fence. Either way, you're allowed to go thru all the way to the island & up the eastern side of it to the junction.
Do NOT interfere with any fences, pumps etc and be sure to stay on the road only. Be courteous to any local land owners you may meet but don't be bullied off of the road.

took the kids down for a swim. Had one mob driving around in a car thru the paddock and on the road watching us. Then i see them with a camera spying on us. Another person there had video camera in their backpack with very good zoom; there was video taken of those who were taking pictures/video of the children. Quite concerning with my 4 year old daughter in her bathers and getting changed by the car! The police take a dim view of that sort of thing...
On a brighter note, basser came for a quick flick n got a couple of bass, and i know a 57cm horse was caught there this arvo by another person....

Was a bit weird them hiding in the trees with the camera, but I'm sure you remember one of the last times we took the boat down there that same lady was the one getting around in her underwear. I"m not sure what they get up to, but it should be kept inside.
I was just slow trolling a spinnerbait down the middle and picked up a couple and dropped a couple.

Seems like the larger fish are out in the middle, and we have been getting ours on spinnerbaits retrieved with a very slow roll along the bottom.
Good to see Steve(Elops) out there yesterday too.
Cheers,
Dave.

Some solid fish there guys and girls I may have to plan a trip down one w/end and reaquaint myself with Mr Bassy as it has been pretty lean after a sensational start to the season. Thanks for sharing - especially all the info on access logistics - very helpfull. Cheers Pat.
