Walsh River
« on: January 17, 2014, 10:49:53 AM »
While Liz and I were up in Mareeba visiting our daughter and son in law plus 2, son in law Aaron and I went out to Dimboola to do a little exploring along the Walsh River. This little river ultimately flows into the Mitchell, a river I have fond memories of. There was a lot of walking involved, and some cases the scrub was too thick to get close enough to the banks, but we managed to find a few places where we could get a cast in. We were using floating hard body crank type lures and fairly shallow divers at that because the Walsh at this point has very few deep sections. In fact for most of it's length that we explored you could see the bottom. However there were a few deeper sections and we concentrated our efforts at casting around any timber, and especially under overhanging branches. It was this latter technique that bought most success. The fish were not big but still gave a good account of themselves, very often hitting the lure on touchdown. Oddly enough surface lures were not successful even it the late afternoon.
I had fished Walsh before with fairly light (bream) gear and caught a lot of these smaller Sooty Grunter. They are a great little fish on light gear but I only had a bait caster rigged with 20lb braid and was trying to cast lures in the 7-9 gram range. The Sooties were hitting hard mostly on the surface or just under it. So if you find yourself up here with some light gear, get out to one of these little streams and have yourself a bit fun.

JD, do you know if there's any saratoga in the Walsh River up there where you were fishing?

Sooties are great fun when they're in that "in flight intercept" mood.  :thumbsup
