Australia’s Gold Team is still in the lead after day two of the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships being held in Tasmania, followed by Northern Ireland and England. With one morning’s fishing left on the final day of the Championships, Australia has a very good chance of a medal.
Cooler weather on the second day suited the competitors on the lakes at Arthurs Lake, Woods Lake and Little Pine Lagoon. Overcast skies and drizzling rain on the Central Plateau saw more fish caught than on the previous day but Little Pine Lagoon remained a challenge.
The top ten anglers yesterday were Christopher Bassano (Aus Gold), Craig Carey (Aus Gold), John Tyzack (Eng), Campbell Baird (N. Ire), Brian Hughes (Aus Green), Nigel Juby (NZ Silver), Geoff Thomas (IOM), Emelio Caggiano (Aus Go), Lubin Pfeiffer (Aus Green) and James Litster (Sco - M).
The Commonwealth Championships will continue at the same five venues this morning, and results will be announced at the Closing Ceremony at the Country Club Casino Banquet Hall. A number of activities are being held on the final day of the Championships, including a celebrity fly fishing competition in the morning and a fly fishing expo in the afternoon in the grounds of the Country Club Tasmania, which is a major sponsor of the event.
The expo includes the final competitive event of the Championships which is a fly tying competition with a representative from each team aiming to tie the best fly. The expo, which is open to the public, will showcase fly fishing equipment and information as well as demonstrations of casting, fly tying and cane rod building. Amongst other well known local identities fishing in the celebrity competition will be the Right Honourable Malcolm Fraser and his wife Tammy. Apart from being Australia’s 22nd Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser was the previous patron of Fly Fish Australia.
