BARRA WORLD RECORD SMASHED AT MONDY!!!
« on: December 23, 2010, 01:12:31 PM »
THE world's fishing spotlight is set to shine on Lake Monduran, with possibly the biggest ever barramundi caught on rod and reel claimed there on Tuesday night.
Fishing from a kayak, Denis Harrold landed the monster fish, which tipped the scales at 44.6kg. It measured in at 135cm with a whopping girth of 107cm.
The Monduran fish broke the old world mark of 37.85kg – held since 1999 from Lake Tinaroo, in far north Queensland – by almost 7kg.
The big barra fell to a slow-trolled 130 Squidgy slick rig soft plastic in black/gold colouration.
As well as the challenges of fighting such a big fish from a kayak, Mr Harrold, from Mackay, hooked it on a “really light” 4-6kg combo, because he “likes to accentuate the fight”.
Once it realised it was hooked, the giant fish peeled 80m of 30lb braid from the reel before crashing across the lake's surface.
“When I heard it crash, I knew it was a big fish,” Mr Harrold said.
“I didn't realise it was a world record barra, but I knew it was a snodger.”
Mr Harrold, who specialises in targeting big impoundment barra from a kayak, and his fishing partner Mick Self had landed about 15 barra during the four nights they had been at the dam.
Their haul had included five fish from 123-127cm long.
With the water rushing over the spillway for the first time since 1992, Mr Harrold attributed the hot fishing to the creatures' desire to reach salt water to spawn.
“When we came here, right at the start, we said if ever we were going to catch a big fish it's now,” Mr Harrold said.
Bundaberg Sportfishing Club weighmaster/recorder Elle Hodge confirmed the catch on official scales yesterday.
Mr Harrold's joy was tempered after he was told he could not claim the record because he did not belong to a relevant sportfishing organisation.
But Bundaberg Sportfishing Club secretary Geoff Hodge confirmed an International Gamefishing Association (IGFA) all-tackle record application could be submitted with the appropriate payment.
“I was happy when I saw 135cm. When I saw 44.6kg on the scales I was ecstatic, but when I found out it was eligible for a world record, I was absolutely delighted,” Mr Harrold said.
Lake Monduran Holiday Park manager Rob Howell said the pending world record catch gave the impoundment ultimate bragging rights.
“It's awesome,” he said.
“It shows people just how good we are as a fishery.
“You can definitely say we're the premier big barra dam in Queensland.”
But Mr Howell reckons there are even bigger monsters lurking in the lake.
“There are bigger ones out there all right,” he said.
“You just can't hold them.”
From the Bundaberg News paper. Regards Matt Hansen.

Wow, it's grown a centimetre since Fitz posted it last night.  Dang things dead and it's gettin' bigger.

It is a huge fish though.  Well done to the angler.

It was on the 7.00pm project on ten tonite. If he hadn't been in a kayak it might have pulled him overboard. It's starting to get scary up there.

I wonder how hard Monduran will get fished after that stupidly large tadpole was reefed out of there ?

It was on 10 news at 5, 7 news and the 7pm project is just what i saw so i expect a few people to get itchy feet to get out there.

Brian, if thats the bar, then your fish would have just clipped it with a toenail....I reckon that one of yours last month was as close to that as I have seen..deffinately from the same batch!

Pablo,

Brian has a photo on the mat, I have compared the two, and they are a bees d%ck in size difference in my opinion. They would deffinately be from the same stocking batch. he was solo fishing too. There is a photo on another site.

yeah, I wonder about the weight Seve, I couldnt lift that thing of mine, but I reckon that beast mite be a tad heavier, certainly has me on length. For sure from the same stock group. Good luck to him, a great fish, and typifies why a lot of people keep going back, me included.
There are some awesome fish in that pond, bigger ones swimming in there I reckon, I hooked a fish in Bird a month or so ago that smashd a stalled Rapala so hard, it snapped the 30 at the line guide of the zillion like cotton, never had a fish bash a lure like that before. Frank just looked at me and said "how the hell do you stop a fish like that?"

Appears to be a pretty effective technique - trolling slickies along the edges from a yak, Im guesing that rise fall as the yakker paddles and glides does the trick, heavy head keeps it down the water column a litle bit, most of the yak crew Ive spoken to at the ramp fish them.

Just a note for any yakkers considering venturing out, please have an all round light on, Ive nearly collected a couple of yaks coming into the basin at night, flashing a head lamp aound at the last possible moment makes it a bit  hard to see you, last thing any one wants is an accident.

Merry Christmas to all.

Thanks Brian, I would love to think there is bigger in there!!! Its a marvelous catch, and well deserved too. He's a lucky bloke to now hold a world record. Something to be proud of. What I really like (and its a bit selfish) is this single fish, will multiply into 1000's more fish by advertising alone. It will get more fisherman coming here, and Awoonga and ticking the box on SIP....More fingerlings. That can only be a good thing for fishing.

Cheers Steve

Seems that way, not just on barra. Saw a picture of a 90cm snapper caught in Moreton Bay doing the same...franga trolled behind the kayak.

A very good piece of advice for this thread Brian, thanks. Also a good idea for daylight is a flag and / or bright colored hat/clothing.

Where's the pictures of your horse BR?

Fitz

Here's a pic of Rakey's horse, plus a scale for perspective. Think that is about metrey number 16 or 17 for the year for him....for a travelling angler, it is an outstanding year he's had.

Cheers
Paul
