Title: Surface Walking lures
Post by: 4weightfanatic on October 29, 2011, 09:10:00 AM
I've been trying a few different lures on the bass of late and am really liking using the surface walking lures like the Berkley Scumdog and a larger similar lure the Gladiator Kozami 60 top walker. The Kozami 60 is more suited to the heavier braid I use on one setup (10lb fireline) whilst the 48 mm Scumdog casts beautifully and walks really well on the lighter set up (6 lb Super PE braid)...........just had to stop typing and investigate a strange noise in the "foyer" of the house.. :o ::) a bloody great bush turkey in the house .. just glad it didn't drop a turd goin' git ! Anyway the Kozami pulled a couple of fish at rest soon after landing this morning after previously having hits miss the hooks at another spot. I love the action of both lures but I have been thinking maybe a bigger lure like the 60 mm one will tempt bigger fish. I did however get a decent size Spangled Perch on the 48 mm Scumdog the other evening just as I was about to lift the lure out at the end of the retrieve. The Kozami is reasonably priced at only $9.95 so a bit cheaper than the Sammy's and other top priced lures. I tie both lures with a loop knot (most times ;D ;D) Cheers Pat

i love using berkly scum dogs in smaller shallow creeks where a smaller more subtle presentation works best.

How do you find the hooks go straight out of the packet on the scumdogs? They are pretty fine  :o

Might last half a dozen decent crik bass  but after that  :thumbdown

Replacement owners are no better... still looking for a better replacement trebles

Yeah I thought so, even the old bream test them out a bit!
I will be interested to see if you find a decent replacement, I reckon they would be guns for bass

I wonder whether a single larger treble like a size 10 on the front with the rear removed would affect the action too much on the 48 mm Scumdogs. Considering a high percentage of hits are at the head of the lure you may miss some tail biters but your always going to miss some. I can't believe how many missed hits I've had with two trebles in these and other lures (namely the Bat) with the lure pulled under taking some line but not finding the hooks. I wonder whether the lure has been attacked head on where there are no hooks. I may even try a single hook attached to the tie in ring should tangle less than a treble !!!! May even give it a test right now. Pat.
