Title: Sit In Kayaks ( around 3 metres long )

I am thinking of getting a small sit in kayak , around 3 metres in length . I know of the Perception Blast , currently available at a southport shop for $699 . I have also seen via the net a yak called a Riot-Quest 10 HV but can't see a price for it .

Anyone know of any other contenders I should be looking at? It will be primarily used for skinny water fishing .

Works perfect for skinny water. I've been paddling one in places like Dumaresq, Stanley, Severn rivers etc.

I like the look of the Dirigo. Do you need 10' for a reason? A 12 footer will be easier to paddle, and faster. I prefer sit-ins now, it's easier to stick a rod up under the front when you get in thick cover and they need less water to float. The centre of balance is a lot lower which makes them feel more stable.

I currently have a Tarpon 100 sit on top , for portage in rapids or overland , that length works well . Alison has shown interest in skinny water fishing , so thats the excuse for another yak .

Fitzy , I haven't checked that one out yet . I have noticed while using my Tarpon , skinny water fishing can be pretty hard on the yak , almost like you treat the yak like its stolen . That Dirigo looks too nice to submit to that punishment. :)

Bushwhacker , have you seen the movie Zombieland? Woody Harleson 'takes care of' the zombies with a banjo in the film . A sit in yak could store more life preserving tools. ;D

Thanks for the offer Fitzy , maybe not this weekend but we could organize a fish one arvo where you bring one along .

Went down the coast this afternoon , dropped into a couple of kayak dealers . Was impressed with the Riot-Quest for the price , also checked out the perception impulse .

If I decide on a 120 in size , the Dirigo does look very good . Another contender in that size range is the Wilderness Systems Pungo120 but I don't know what availability there is of it in Aus.

Fitzies worked well when I saw it. ( he didn't catch many fish tho )

With your bum at water level you can handle chop and swell better IMO.

Dave,
Doing Nautilus impersonations against fallen trees in rapids will mess them up every time. From my limited experience, most Kayaks prefer to be on the surface not grinding themselves to pieces compliments of the raging hydraulic power of the water and the rapid bottom?

Contributing factor ya reckon?

At that 'family gathering' it took the wilds of that raging torrent to dislodge me from my seat .Whereas it was you that was battling the smooth water in trying to keep afloat , lucky for you a Mate lent you scuppers so that you could stay dry ;D

Maybe I should ask if there is a deal on buying two kayaks that way you can stay dry aswell , or won't the new wife allow that ? ::)

Post by: Novice on April 11, 2011, 12:02:24 PM: Well I decided to go with the cheap-arse option , and purchased the Riot Quest HV @ $699 with the rear rod holders already in place . It goes very well , light enough to drag over anything and comes with 2 drink holders ( large enough for a can and its cooler ) . Apparently the Bass mojo comes with it .

The Hobie paddle that comes with the Outback are totally cr@p . I snapped mine on the first time I used the Outback without the mirage drive . In a moment of madness I purchased the paddle that comes with the Hobie Quest , I just use that on the paddle yaks now.
