Title: HAVE YOU FISHED SOMERSET DAM ?
Post by: BG on April 26, 2011, 10:48:26 AM
Gday Fellas

If you happened to fish Somerset Dam over the break or recently, could you let us know if you have caught a Pearl Cichlid as shown in the photograph attached.

These are a pest fish that is now in the waterways and it would be nice to find out that it is not going to multiply like the Talapia.

Also, if you happened to pick up a Fork Tailed Catfish, please advise.

Both of these should be destroyed.

Thank you

Gordon

Gordon,
In a nutshell G. brasiliensis is a riverine SA Cichlid, the recent flood events would have undoubtedly spread them through the whole system.
Will never reach the numbers and range that Tilapia has but the bottom line is they will increase in number and spread.

We can only hope that in this environment that the Bass are getting fat on their young.

I'm not one to cut up a Bass to find out but regular feed back may tell us something Steve.

Gee Gordon, I hope there has been no sighting of forkies in there. North Pine has had some mongrel introduce them a few years ago. They are showing up only occasionally at this stage, but the mongrels are in there.

No need to cut them up Gordon, David Roberts at SEQ Water takes samples for gut content analysis.
Everything eats Tilapia the Pearls will get eaten too.
Andrew the 3 60 cm Forkies from last year were 12 years old.

cheers
Steve
