Kookaburra Park re-opens
« on: January 04, 2013, 10:30:59 PM »
Kookaburra Park has re-opened to the public. There are 15 car and trailer parking spots plus a stack of car only spots. While there is a few facilities there including electric BBQs, seats & toilet facilities up near the kids playground, I think this is stage two almost completed with a few more things to be added/completed.

Info from Brisbane City Council
Quote
About the project
Kookaburra Park is one of the city's riverside parks extensively damaged during the flood. Council has completed revitalisation and reconstruction of the park and has now been re-opened to the community.

Project features and timing
Council completed Stage 1 of the project in February 2012.

Stage 1 works involved:
- replacing the shade sail
- replacing damaged playground equipment
- replacing and relocating the toilet block
- reconstructing and temporarily opening the secondary car park near the playground

Stage 2 works involved repairing remaining facilities in the park, including:
- replacing and relocating the boat ramp
- reinstating the kayak/canoe facility near the main car park and providing a pathway linking to the Brisbane River, beach, toilet and other park facilities
- replacing and relocating picnic and barbeque facilities throughout the park
- repairing and rebuilding the damaged access road
- installing a raised crossing across the park access road to allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross safely
- reinstating the dog off-leash area
- re-turfing and re-planting vegetation
- reconstructing the river bank wall

Over the coming months, Council will finalise work to reinstate the fishing facility, including installation of a shelter and furniture.

Boat ramp looks more civilised. Wonder how it is at low tide?

I did a bit of work there during its reconstruction. They actually stuffed up the boat ramp design, had to pull it out and try again lol at low tide, it didnt cover the end of the ramp. So I assume they would have fixed it haha

I think they are talking about the canoe/kayak club storage shed that was onsite, just below the play ground.

I've noticed that there doesn't seem to be any signage as to where the authorised ski zone is (unless I've missed it). Hence, ski boats have a free for all at the moment using both the upstream and downstream stretches from the boat ramp. Not real safe for paddle craft when there's a few skiers around. Would be nice if they reinstate the no-ski zone similar to before the floods. Does anyone know if this is the intention? I'd like to be able to launch my kayak and fish the river upstream without the ski lice making it too dangerous. I also thought there was going to be a dedicated kayak/canoe launching area. Can't see one yet??

There is effectively a no-ski zone exactly as it was previously, 6 knots maximum for all craft upstream of Kookaburra Park boat ramp to Mt Crosby Weir.

Thanks for the info there Fitz. Shame there was so many down there the other day that didn't know or care! That's why I believe there should be adequate signage!

Oh yeah I have a vague memory of that shed, didn't know thats what it was for though. Long portage humping them from there to the ramp!

Took the wife and kids down there on Saturday for a quick paddle and some land based fishing.

The good :

we actually caught some fish, bream and catfish on Vegemite dough,  3 and 5 year old had a ball

easy parking for cars and trailers.
rigging / unloading area at the top of the ramp.
bbq's, shade structures, playgrounds and the start of some shade trees along the pathways.

The very very bad :

dead catfish everywhere, thrown 10+ meters from water and even a pile in the rock creavice 1m from the table at the fishing shelter.

table covered in fish guts / bait juice and bait packets everywhere despite 2 large bins less than 2meters from the shelter.

All up a great area, but spoilt by the disgraceful actions of a few.
