Lake Clarendon
« on: June 26, 2014, 02:01:40 PM »
The Rec Review was released today, and Lake Clarendon will be open to Kayaking once a suitable landing area has been established.  Fishing will be permitted from paddle craft and from the shore.

A negative outcome in my view is no more dogs at Lake Dyer.  It was about the only place left you could take your dog for a swim, apart from the river at Fernvale I guess, which really makes sense.

I think they just opened Lake Moogerah &/or Lake Maroon to pooches. Will have to re-read the results but I think that's close.

It'll be a fenced in area I think Fitz, they're trying to keep them out of the water.  I guess the cattle below Big W aren't as polluting as a dachshund in in dam.

Don't know alot about the lake but, given its irrigation use and the drought back in the 2000's, would there be any resident fish still there? Or would we have to re-stock from scratch? Looking forward to calling it my local.

SEQwater wouldn't know who has done what to who, even if you did it in front of them. Not once was the system/operations manger/s for lakes Aktinson/Claredon/Dyer receive an email or phone call from the recreation side of SEQweater during the recreational review !!
Some years ago (over 7 years) a number of Bass fingerless were released into the lake back then the water level was less then 20%, it was from a donation/grant from the old Gatton Shire Council. The local stocking group were given approx. $2000 at the time.

You never have been able to swim your dog in Lake Dyer - you were allowed to take your dog to the day use area but you were not allowed to let it into the water. It was more the case someone saw someone else letting there dog go for a swim so they did too.

And your a member of a stocking group and do not know why your dog/s shouldn't be allowed to swim in dams stocked with fish ?? You best give Matt Johnson(You know who use to work for SEQFish) and ask him or Steve Brooks or I will give you a quick idea, it has something to do with the flea and tick treatment used on dogs and what it does to fingerlings. And if you guessed it kills them, give yourself a pat on the back.

I remember Alex Hamlyn raving about the potential of Lake Clarendon as a fishery. He said there is some great structure up the back "great habitat for cod", if it could ever get full enough for the water to reach the trees. I've visited there alot, only to the picnic area on my way past, but haven't been on the water there. If Alex says it should be a good fishery, that's good enough for me. I think a positive outcome for recreational fishing in the Lockyer Valley. On top of what what mentioned above, I was told that "a few MRCs" were liberated there some years ago when the water was up around 20%, but that was pre-drought. Think it may have dried up in the big dry.

I would guess the Lockyer Fish Restocking group would be happy with this outcome?

Yep, those dogs swimming in Moogerah certainly killed all the Bass, and I guess there are no fish around Fernvale or Lowood.  Strange that all those relievers swimming around Victorian and NSW lakes haven't affected their fish.  Anyway, it can't happen up here now anyway.

Now Alex Hamlyn is a name I haven't heard of in a long time. I remember releasing fingerlings on the Granite Belt with Alex in the mid 90's when I was about 7 or 8. Sparked my interest in fisheries management from that age.
